The battery in the key fob is used for the transmitter for the button actions. Remote Start, Lock, Unlock, Open and Close Liftgate and Panic. It is also constantly transmitting a low signal to the two receivers in the car to allow you to start it as long as the key is anywhere inside the car. If the battery goes dead, you take the key fob and place it on the right side of the steering column where there is a picture of a key and hold it there while pressing the brake and pushing the engine start button as usual. The car will start normally. It uses a RFID tag to identify it is your key fob. If you want to test this, just remove the battery from the key fob and try it.
