First of all, this thread is great. Thanks to all who contributed!

Question: Why does this need to be hardwired to the fuse box? Can't I just get a power wire to plug into a cigarette lighter or USB port?

most dash cams are supplied with a power wire to use in a cigarette port USB charger, however, plugging it in and out every time is annoying and you have a dangly wire in your way.

hard wiring makes the dash cam "set and forget". its always running when you are driving.

For a cleaner and more permanent install (and to not use up a USB port).

I have an A119 in our Fit and was talking about (reasoning with the DW) ordering another for our soon to arrive Escape which I did and later that day I saw a dash-cam video of an accident that closed a road in our area the week prior that shows the exact reason we have one and I bought another for the Escape.

Search for the YouTube video "Vehicle spins into snowbank on Ontario highway" (can't post link or video having too few posts having just recently joined). The story to police would have been from the other driver (without any evidence countering) they were cut-off and were "pushed off" the road where the dash-cam video shows the exact opposite and the aggressive driving of the one "pushed off" the road caused the accident and they were entirely at fault.

Hardwired my A119C yesterday and have seen in a PP (the search function links don't work currently for me with the latest HTTPS forced version of Chrome) the grounding point under the passengers side sill.

It was easy to access prying off one piece of trim and having the bolt and grounding point already there, all that needed to be done was add my eye hook and wire and I now have my own grounding point under the dash for anything else I want.

The 2017 Escape has a huge area devoted to dot pattern on the windshield. It is quite ugly from the outside and was tough finding a spot I liked for my A119 b/c of the large v-shaped area that flares out. Putting it off to the edge of the pattern behind the mirror wasn't working well b/c the wide angle lens would pick up the pattern. I ended up cutting off part of the plastic housing to make room. I don't have any of the sensors hidden underneath. The part only costs $10 so I thought "why not try it?". Here are the results...

I'm fairly happy with the results. I could have moved it a little closer to the opening but I do need some room to remove the camera from the GPS mount.

Hey guys - planning on installing at least on camera this weekend, might do the rear facing camera if everything goes well with the front facing camera. Does anyone have any tips or tricks that I should keep in mind when installing on a 2017? I'm planning to follow most of the recent directions posted as well and some info from the original post, using the tap a fuse and running the USB cable as hidden as possible.

Did anyone ever figure out what fuse to use in the rear cargo area? I can't remember if that was ever posted already.

Thanks.

The USB ports in the center console cubby power off when the car's off. The 10 foot USB cable that came with my dashcam is plenty long for me to stuff it into the pillar and discreetly bring it into center console usb ports. Works perfectly.

Hmmm, that sounds like a nice option without having to tap into a fuse. Are we sure that the USB ports completely power off when the car is off?

I don't really use CarPlay so I don't need that port, but I guess it would be an issue if I did decide to use CarPlay since I use the USB port inside the arm rest storage area to have my iPod always plugged in. I guess I'll see what works best this weekend when I attempt to install.

My camera's usb cable is power only (it doesn't transmit data). That's important, because it means sync won't screw things up by trying to establish a connection and display error messages, etc..

Power does go off in the usb port when Sync powers down. I should take pictures, but there's nothing to see because the cable tucked in so well.

I'll have to check if my cable is power only, not sure exactly what I ordered from eBay.

Did you follow the route posted in the OP for the cable, or did you do your own specific route. I'm assuming the cable route would not be much different for the 2017 than the past years models.
