I have some old steel ramps that will probably work for the Escape but I need something more like the Rhino design for our Fiestas. The images of failed Rhino ramps along with the write-ups by purchasers/users on Amazon leads me to think they're not safe/reliable.

I use my steel Ramos for everything. If the ground clearance is a challenge I just lay some 2 x 8's that are about 14 inches long right at the start of the ramp. Never a problem with scraping the underside. Steel is the way to go.

I made my own but have a friend who bought some Rhino Ramps and had them fail on him. He's a retired mechanic and used them/drove up on them correctly, not off-centered which can cause failures. Needless to say I ended up building him a set as well. Look on Amazon and Google for a plethora of failed pictures and you will think twice about the Rhino Ramps (new design is supposed to be even weaker). If you want to buy an affordable safe pair, Northern Tool has a set made in Canada for about the same price with no reports of failures.

Never had a problem with mine. I have used them numerous times for 11 years. I bought the 12,000 lb. model. They are made of extruded polymer and will deteriorate if left in the sun. Inspect them regularly, look for twisting and cracks. Replace them if this is observed. Make sure they are centered and square to the vehicle before driving up them. Use your parking brake and/or chocks.
