Check Engine Light On - EcoBoost failure?

Hi,

I have a 2013 Ford Escape SE with 1.6 EcoBoost. There was rattling in the lower front engine part while driving yesterday, which stopped after a half hour or so. Today the check engine light came on. I had the diagnostic test ran and it showed error code: P0234, with the following info:

Definition
Turbocharger/Supercharge a overboost condition
Explanation: The ECM has detected an overboost condition on the turbocharger system
Possible cause:
Engine over temperature condition
Misfire condition detected
Lean Air/Fuel ratio
Failed IAT sensor

Is this still safe to drive until it gets fixed?
Will this be covered under the manufacturers warranty if there is less than 36k miles?
I've only had the car for 6 months, is this going to be an ongoing problem?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Dan

Should be covered under warranty. For overboost, my first suspicion would be the wastegate sticking. All the other listed possible causes have their own fault codes.

+1 on the wastegate. As stated before, if it did not overheat, then every other condition would have a code. I would get it into service ASAP!!!!!! 99.9% chance it should be covered.

2014 Titanium 4WD 2.0L. Package 401A, Moonroof, Navigation System, Trailer Tow Package, 19" Tires, Cargo Mat, and All Weather Floor Mats. Deep Impact Blue with Medium Light Stone Interior.

Dan,

Same light and code happened to me yesterday. Same year/model/engine. Now it's parked until I can have it looked at. Sadly mine is past its warranty... Did you get your's fixed yet?

Isn't this covered by the 5 year / 60,000 mile powertrain warranty? Or do you have over 60,000 miles?

3/36 100% coverage. You'll be covered.

Good luck and keep us updated on the fix. We're all learning here....

Bought mine used, with 47,000 miles So the basic warranty is expired.

From the Ford warranty;

"If you bought a previously owned 2013-model vehicle, you are eligible for any remaining warranty coverages."

Unless you have over 60,000 miles, you should be covered under the 5/60,000. That is not an extended warranty, it is part of the standard warranty package.

Contacted one of the two local dealers (the one I prefer to go to). They stated it would be a minimum of 2 hours to diagnose, and only then would they know if its a part covered under the powertrain warranty. If not I would be stuck with the 2 hours shop cost just to diagnose ($90/hr).

That's wouldn't be the dealer I would choose. If they said a maximum of 2 hours, maybe. But how do they know they won't find the problem in 1/2 hour?

Maybe Tricia can chime in on this.
