Possible reason for crappy mileage: AC is always on!

So I'm getting about 17 mpg, city and highway combined. It's been very disappointing. We're currently having another heatwave (SF, CA) and I noticed there is always cold air coming through the vent, even when the AC is off! I'll stick my hand out the window and it's like 90 degrees out there, but cold air is still coming out of my vents. ***. Looking back on it, I'm always setting my temp at around 76 or the air will be too cold. (Again, the display clearly shows the AC is OFF) I'm calling my Ford's service department tomorrow. Anyone else?

All newer vehicles have the Ac compressor running when the blower is on. This is normal operation.

Not quite true, at least with the dual control system, you can override the compressor operation using the a/c button. At least my '13 works this way.

If there's anything about the Ecoboost motor it's that its very climate and weather sensitive. My MPG drops from anywhere from 2-4 MPG compared to the warmer weather. I also have been running around with the AC on lately and I don't think the AC is as much of an issue as the heat is itself. I wonder if the fact that we have such a small hard working turbo with an intercooler just barely large enough to keep up with the heat (especially if you have the 2.0 liter) affects the MPG mostly in very cold or hot weather.

How does this work? Do you have to hold the button down or something?

Also on our 14. ac does not hurt gas mileage that much if at all on ours.

Hmm, it either says AC ON or AC OFF on my display, cold air comes out either way. Maybe I need to read my manual. Something isn't right.

You have to allow the air to warm up after you switch off the ac. It may take a good minute or 2 before the air coming out of the vents warm up

Even with the AC on all the time you should be getting better mileage than 17 unless you're 100% in stop and go traffic. I also have a '14 FWD 2.0 and the worst mileage I get is 17 when creeping through Chicago traffic. Are you going by the dash display or calculating your own mpg?
