my other vehicle, Baja Turbo, is an example of full time AWD ("45/55 torque split front-to-rear")... Escape is on demand AWD... and, dear, this 12 years old Baja feels much better launching in any stick position than a new Escape.

As you note it may just be the semantics we use. I also have the FE AWD.

The FE isn't full-time AWD, it is on-demand AWD. The FE will use AWD from a stop until it reaches a set speed (I don't remember what the speed is) and then it switches and will primarily be front wheel drive unless slippage is detected, in which case it switches to AWD for that period.

So, in general, the FE is a front wheel drive car with 'intelligent' AWD.

There is a screen you can bring up in the "Information" section on your dash display that shows whether you are in AWD mode or not

Cars that have full-time AWD are the likes of Subaru, Audi, and some others.

That's exactly how I feel, although I do appreciate the education! As far as I'm concerned it's AWD.
