Still on Original Battery!

Hi all. I have a 2013 titanium AWD that I purchased used with 14000m in mid 2014. Still on original battery, currently at approx 35000m. I feel that the car shuts down the sync/radio much faster after the ignition is turned off than when I bought it, but have never had a dead battery. We have a 1500m trip in the next 6 weeks, and wondering if I should go ahead and just get a new battery? How many miles/years have others gotten out of their original batteries?

I'd go ahead and get one. Batteries are not so much miles as age. Mine was doing fine, except for the radio issue like yours, then one day last month, it just wouldn't start the car or hold a charge. I replaced with the factory spec Interstate and changed it myself. Search for the 'Battery Replace' posts if you want to do it yourself.

While I'm as frugal as they come and want to get the 'last little bit' out of everything, I'm with @atlcarl69 on this one.

Why risk that interruption and hassle on an otherwise perfect summer vacation trip for an item you know will likely need replacement sooner than later? The replacement procedure on the Escape is just enough of a 'chore' that I'd rather not have to deal with it on a road trip. Maybe different if it were a simple 'lift-out and drop-in' deal, but no matter how you (or a service facility) approach it, it's a bit more complicated than that on our FEs.

Enjoy your trip!

Good idea to proactively change it. You can see how long batteries last on average by searching "car battery life map" and clicking on images. You'll get what looks like the USDA Plant Zone Map since it's just a temperature chart.

I proactively changed the battery in my wife's 2012 (previous generation) FE. It was 6 years old. The battery in her summer Audi TT was dead this spring. It was also 6 years old.

Also needed tires for her FE and TT, and I redid the rear rotors and pads on my FE. Expensive month for cars!

Also checked the battery in my wife's Moke. Voltage was o.k. It is very, very old. Haven't tried to fire it up yet.

Battery life is a crapshoot. I had the starting battery in a diesel pusher motorhome last so long that if I said how long it lasted, I would probably be called a liar. I did not change it proactively since I could start on the two house batteries.
Since so much is dependent on the battery, I had sometimes been proactive on battery replacement. Years ago I replaced the battery on the wife's S. O. B. vehicle at about three years. The second time we drove that vehicle, the new battery went grave yard dead. Luckily, it was a major brand and there was a store close by that replaced it quickly. So much for being proactive.
I have my newer Fords serviced by the Ford dealer and they indicate that battery check is part of the service. I really do not know if they load check the battery or just look to see if it is still there. The pricing Ford has listed at the dealer is competitive.

I'm actually having the original battery in my 2014 Escape replaced today. Funny how the replacement battery has a 5 year warranty from Ford but the original battery had no such warranty and only lasted 3.5 years...

5 years max I change my battery's no matter what. Sometimes 4 depending.
Over my last 38 years driving had to be over 50 times I heard people tell me "My battery is over 5years old and it's like brand new". Then all of a sudden I hear or get a call "Hey, my car won't start, it's dead". I ask them "how old is the battery". I hear "it's only 4 years old or 5". Tell them "Battery's dead it's old"... They reply "can't be, I just shut the car off, ran in the store, and its dead, must be the alternator". NOPE ...... Every time, turns out to be the battery. Point is, if it's over 4 and especially 5 years old, It can die at anytime and you wont know it until you shut the vehicle off, and go back and start it. It can die that fast... Between 4 and 5 years I change it for the peace of mind. Don't need no surprises having it decide to go dead on me somewhere.

I just replaced mine a month ago (2013 FE w/ 62k miles). Not too bad to replace if you use the directions of the guy on Youtube that removes the wiper blades and cowl, not the one who removes the air box. Took me about 90 minutes but I took a shop vac to the area under the cowl and also replaced the positive cable.

If I haven't changed out a battery by 7 years, I'll do it then. I had two ATVs whose original batteries weren't swapped out until they were over 10 years old. They still started the ATVs but I figured it was time...
