Check Engine Light On - EcoBoost failure?

Hi,

I have a 2013 Ford Escape SE with 1.6 EcoBoost. There was rattling in the lower front engine part while driving yesterday, which stopped after a half hour or so. Today the check engine light came on. I had the diagnostic test ran and it showed error code: P0234, with the following info:

Definition
Turbocharger/Supercharge a overboost condition
Explanation: The ECM has detected an overboost condition on the turbocharger system
Possible cause:
Engine over temperature condition
Misfire condition detected
Lean Air/Fuel ratio
Failed IAT sensor

Is this still safe to drive until it gets fixed?
Will this be covered under the manufacturers warranty if there is less than 36k miles?
I've only had the car for 6 months, is this going to be an ongoing problem?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Should be covered under warranty. For overboost, my first suspicion would be the wastegate sticking. All the other listed possible causes have their own fault codes.

+1 on the wastegate. As stated before, if it did not overheat, then every other condition would have a code. I would get it into service ASAP!!!!!! 99.9% chance it should be covered.

Dan,

Same light and code happened to me yesterday. Same year/model/engine. Now it's parked until I can have it looked at. Sadly mine is past its warranty... Did you get your's fixed yet?

That's wouldn't be the dealer I would choose. If they said a maximum of 2 hours, maybe. But how do they know they won't find the problem in 1/2 hour?

Maybe Tricia can chime in on this.

Well the closer dealer just stated it should only take about an hour, again though they wouldn't know if it was covered until they can pin point the issue. I'm not that mechanically included, but i thought knowing the code helps to narrow the choices. Seams like both dealers want to run there own code and charge first?

I can see them needing to make a determination. Since you bought it used, you don't know if somebody before you made some modification that caused the problem. And, they are entitled to be paid for their time. All those service people do want a paycheck at the end of the week.

If the problem is covered, even the diagnostic time should be covered by Ford.

Good Luck!

I don't mind paying for their time/work, thats why I got to a dealership with factory certified mechanics vs. the alternative. I would just think that the service contact at the desk that schedule appointments would be a little more knowledgeable about general warranty questions. Everything you find in general searches online point in the direction of the powertain vs not, however they don't know if the ecoboost system is part of it? Will just have to find out and schedule and appointment tomorrow and see.

Hey guys,

Glad to see you’re joining in on the posting action! :)

I’ll be happy to look into your concerns. What’s the current mileage on your vehicles?

Thanks for the mention, Bill_de.

I’m on it, and have a wonderful day! :D

Update:

I asked my neighbor (Ford Certified Mechanic @ closes dealership) what he thought before I made appointment. He ran the code/diagnosis and looked more in-depth at the information Ford can pull from their code readers.

From all the data he could pull form the computer it looked to be the sensor malfunctioning, and not a more in depth problem of the engine (since there was no obvious signs of engine trouble as others have reported). He reset the code and we are monitoring to see if it reoccurs, in the mean time it is safe to drive as normal.

Same Problem

I am having the same problem and the car is currently at the dealer. They have been working on it for over a day and have spoken to Ford. Bottom line, they can't figure it out.

Here are the conditions when it happens:

- below freezing temps
- cruise engaged
- car is going up a hill where it needs to upshift in order to maintain cruise speed
- it upshifts, the shift is a hard shift and the P0234 message occurs.

Also, the light was on and then went off after some time in warmer temps. As soon as we got below freezing which was a few days later, the light went back on and the error message occurred again.

I mentioned the TSB 14-0107 but they said that didn't apply to this situation. They said they checked the wastegate and it was fine, but didn't probe exactly how they checked it. They said the are looking at the wiring splices to see if that is the issue like in the 2.0L recall. The dealer is working with Ford to try and figure it out.

What really has me mad is that they can't tell me if this will be covered under recall. I have about 59500 on my 2013 Ford Escape.

Why do I feel like I am going to be without a car for quite a while and that this is only the start of a long, drawn out, difficult process? Maybe because last night, when I called the dealer 5 minutes before the service department was supposed to close to get an update, everyone in the service department was already gone. Doesn't give me a lot of confidence that this is on anyone's priority or todo list. Grrrr...

Car sitting at dealer

Not very happy right now. Dealer says "we see the code, but we can't find anything wrong. That will be $110 please." Problem is that the turbo is covered under the power train warranty and just because you can't find anything wrong doesn't mean I should have to pay.

All they did was test circuits. There was no mechanical test of the wastegate. I suspect that either the wastegate wasn't opening or it couldn't evacuate fast enough. But we won't know unless they agree to test it.

At this point, I think I know how to avoid the condition so I just don't want to be charged the $110. Ford should pick that up.

I opened a case with Ford and I am waiting for a call from the regional rep. Until I get this resolved, the car will sit at the dealer.

After the fiasco with the CVT on my Ford Freestyle, I went ahead and bought a Mazda 5 to replace it. I decided to give Ford another chance. Would they really want to lose a customer over $110 and a warranty dispute? I guess we will find out.

If anyone has a dealer that has resolved this issue, please reply. I would love to get my dealer in touch with them because my dealer has given up trying to resolve the problem.

Was the rattle commented on by any of the dealers/mechanics?

Was this ever resolved. I have had the same problem 3 months ago. The dealer was clueless. But really communicated with me about it. finally changed a wiring harness and it was great for 3 months..... Now exact same code and engine light has come on again. No issues with anything other than the weather is getting colder. Would like to hear if this was resolved to be a drivetrain issue??

I had the overboost code show up as well on my '13 Escape. Took it in to dealer & they said there was a Service Bulletin issued on this last week. They ordered a "solenoid" & will replace it next week (covered under power train warranty).
Quick follow-up with more details for anyone in the future getting this turbo charger overboost on their '13 Escape. From the invoice the TSB is 15-0162 & the part they replaced was a Wastegate Solenoid # CJ5Z-9K378-B. Both parts & labor covered under the warranty [in & out with just a signature :) ].

So far, so good.

Update:

After going nearly a year since the last time the code was cleared, it has come on twice in the last 2 weeks. This time I went back to this thread and noticed that others are still/again having this issue. I wen forth and made an appointment with my local dealer stating this problem.

After dropping it off early at the dealer, I got a call stating it was in fact an item with the power train as indicated in the above motioned forum. Having just over 50k in millage they are replacing the part under the powertrain warranty. I get to pick it up this Friday afternoon, hopefully all fixed.

I just wanted to say thank you for keeping up with this thread. I had my wife's Escape throw the P0234 code on our way home from lunch. I find it odd you're occurred in sub-zero temps, and we just got our first snow and temp is in the high 20's. We had a spat of cold weather before, but I don't think she drove in it.

Regardless, I appreciate the information here. The Escape is out of warranty so I am going to attempt to fix it on my own.

I recently scan my 2013 escape for fault code and it display the code of p0234 but there's no check engine light on my dashboard. Before i buy the vehicle i drove and scan it but there's was no fault code and that was summer time. I'm not sure if the below freezing temperature affect the ecoboost.

I Ihad this pop up today and took it my local ford dealer. They are claiming the part is on national backorder and that it is not covered under my ford certified 100K powertrain warranty. It seems nearly everyone has had this covered under powertrain.

They cleared the code for now, but is it safe to drive until the part comes in? They say they are not sure when it will be off backorder.
