I have had my 2013 Escape Titanium for a year and a half now, and I love it !!
Except, I have a rattling noise in or around my moonroof that is driving me crazy !! It only rattles on backroads, or when I am going between 30-50 mph. It is loud enough you can hear it over the stereo. Today I had someone drive my car while I sat in the backseat trying to pinpoint if it was a loose part but did not find that to be the case. But when I pushed up on the stationary glass of the panoramic roof, the noise would stop. I really hope someone can tell me what this is, and if they experienced it and fixed it. I would so appreciative.
Thank you, Patrick

On the inside of the car there is a 4 inch wide black plastic trim that runs across between the two pieces of glass. You can grab this trim and pull it down about an inch or so. When it is making this noise, lightly pull down on that trim and tell me if the noise stops.

I had a noisy sunroof last summer and my fix was loose bolts/nuts at the rear of the sunroof.Recently I have developed a new noise that is bothering me again with the sunroof, different sound (itchy, scratching) but I am going to wait until spring so I don't have to deal with the inconvenience in the winter, just too much stress.
Keep us posted, maybe your fix will be mine?

The noise I am talking about is that of the black plastic trim that runs across between the two glass panels. If by either pushing up slightly or pulling down slightly on this trim makes the noise go away, I have a fix for that. I might as well just post it now in case anyone else has this problem. That plastic trim has two little "stops" that keep it from hitting the glass panels and you can either put a little grease between the stops and the frame where they hit or add little felt dots. I added felt dots. No more "ticking" noise. Photos below.

By the way, after 15 months and 43K miles of owning this car, I have only had two nosies in this very quiet Escape. This sunroof trim was one and the other was the plastic speaker grill at the top center of the dash. For that one I removed the entire center dash panel (just unsnaps), removed the grill, added felt pads between the panel and the grill, snapped the grill back into the center panel and reinstalled the panel. Another thing that you want to do is apply silicone grease along all edges of that center dash panel so when it rubs against the other plastic parts, there are no creaking noises. I also did this with the console parts and bits. No plastic creaking nosies in my car.

I am going to try this with the felt, seems easy enough, plus it will be done to my specifications.Thank you for showing where to put the felt, you rock!!:)

Welcome to the community, taprennoc!

I’m the Ford Customer Service Representative on this forum, and my name is Tricia. Let’s figure out what’s causing all the commotion.

What’s the current mileage on your Escape?

TBM2013,

Let me know if you decide to take your Escape in before the spring hits. Either way, I’ll be here if you need me.

Hi Tricia,
Mine is a 2013 Titanium. Currently just over 25k miles, but the noise has been there since the first week I got it. I originally thought the rear shoulder seat belt was hitting the side panel but that wasn't it, then I thought maybe something in the rear cargo area was bouncing but that is not it either. I have pinpointed the noise to either the retractable sunshade hitting the glass, or something knocking on the panoramic glass near the rear. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be so appreciated. It really is just a horribly annoying sound which ruins what should be a very quiet cabin.

Well the trick that MarkBoris gave me seemed to eliminate about 80% of the noise. It took me a few minutes to figure out where to put the felt dots, and that the piece did pull down and has 2 tiny little "hook" points that were apparently tapping the glass.. Now the felt is there and the noise is almost completely gone, or so minimal I have almost forgotten about it already. Dare I say I might even try to double up on the felt dots to see if that quets it completely.. Not sure yet. but thank you for the help. Honestly, it makes it so much better.

Yeah, my Escape had a rattle, that seemed to be coming from the right side, checked the inside liftgate handle, the pass seat... couldn't find it. Finally, just this week, I had to stuff some papers in the center console, and the noise disappeared, this led me to remove the little tray (factory), no noise! I put some self stick felt around the parts where the tray contacts the box and lid, rattle solved! Note, my '13 doesn't have the little tabs that keep it from sliding like the '14+ has, so I don't know if this was just a '13 issue.

I found this post after I figured out the problem but figured I would post a couple of pictures and my 2 cents. It was a squeak in my case. From the factory (I'm assuming) there is a tape applied to the metal piece that the little tab contacts. On the passenger side the tape was applied about a 1/8" off. I thought of using some silicone grease but just ended up using a piece of electrical tape. Did the trick perfectly. You can see the the clear white-ish factory tape and the electrical tape.

Same here

I have the same "rattle" cracking noise on the right side. It is litterally driving me crazy!!! I am in Québec, and I can tell you it is very loud when the car is cold. I have been to my service point (great service by the way) they have changed and remove the whole roof three times and I Still get that cracking noise every day (since 2013). I really love my Escape and would like to know how to fix this once and for all.... That noise is there since the first week I got the car by the way, it is not a wearing out issue

Thank you for this post. My sunroof has been making noises for a while now but I could not find source. The metal hooks were making direct contact with the glass and scratch marks were visible. Hoping the felt pads installed solve this issue. I still need to figure out how to quiet down the center dash.

Saved My Sanity!

The felt dot trick continues to be valuable, even years later! I just bought a 2014 Escape last spring, and within the past month it suddenly developed the rattling sound that everyone here knows so well. It was a bit of a chore getting the dots in the right place, but it seems to have worked great!

Thanks to MarkBoris for the solution all those years ago!

Over the weekend I applied the felt dots to the roof area. Unfortunately it still rattles and buzzes badly around 2700RPM and when the temperature is below 50 degrees. Back to the drawing boards!

Also -- for the noise in front stack -- be careful taking off the cover over the stereo. I managed to snap off one of the plastic connectors.
