Anti-theft light blinking, car won't start, need to reset

Hello everyone, I know this is an older car, but I can't find any other website that I can receive answers from. I bought a 2004 Ford Escape from my friend. The battery died before I picked it up, so he bought a new battery and installed it for me. The only problem is now the car absolutely will not start. It cranks, but it won't start. The anti-theft light keeps blinking and I'm pretty sure that the car is basically acting like it has been stolen. I'm wondering what I can do to reset the security system. So far I've done simple things like locking and unlocking the car with the FOB key. Right now I unplugged the battery to see if it can reset itself overnight. The next thing I will be trying will be taking off the plugs, touching the wires together, then reconnecting the battery.

I'm just hoping to find any advice that I can. This is my first car and I just want the dang thing to work. lol I don't want to have to tow it to a Ford dealership because the nearest one is an hour away. I will if I absolutely have to, but I'm wondering if other people have had this issue and what solutions that have found.

Thanks in advance.

My aftermarket alarm does the same thing on my protégé 5. I insert the key with the battery off, turn it to ignitjon, and then connect the battery. It works like a charm, but is still a pain when I need to do it

your 2004 escape has a passive anti theft system (PATS). basically there is a sensor in the steering column right behind where you insert the key that is looking for the chip that is in the key.

So, either you don't have a key with the chip in it, or the PATS sensor is unplugged or malfunctioning somehow.

also, this forum is primarily for 2013 and above Escape. However i have a 2004 Focus, so the system will be similar.

As Thenorm has said, this site is for 2013 and newer Escapes. You might want to try www.escape-city.com for the older generation Escapes. Good luck with your search. I hope you are able to find a solution to your problem.
