Curt vs. Hidden Hitches

I am deciding between a curt hitch and the drawtite hitch version for 2013 escape. I like that the curt hides further under the vehicle than the hidden. Both are class 3 hitches.

But, when talking with a friend who was pondering the same thing on his Subaru, he purchased the curt, but in the instructions, it mentions that the hitch is not designed for "unsupported loads" and will void the warranty they are not responsible for damage to the vehicle. Unsupported, like a bike rack (the main reason I'm getting the hitch), haul basket, etc. The drawtite (hidden hitch) doesn't have any such disclaimer and that is why he went with them.

Has anybody heard of such a thing? Is it only because of his subby, and is a non-issue on the escape because of the frame design? Just wondering - I wanna order either one asap.

You can download the instructions specific to the Curt offerings for '13 Escape application at the Curt website

Class 3 13186 http://www.curtmfg.com/masterlibrary..._13186_INS.PDF

Class 2 12111 http://www.curtmfg.com/masterlibrary..._12111_INS.PDF

From a quick review of those I note a warning that stabilizer straps are recommended for "non-trailer (wheel-less) loads" with the Class 2 12111 but it appears the Class 3 13186 has no warnings/limitations relating to non-trailer loads.

You might want to read those carefully yourself in case I missed something or give Curt a call at their toll-free number to get first-hand info on the exact product / application you are considering. IMHO all that matters for you is info on your application, not a Subaru.

Hope that helps, 'Hook-Em ...'

Oh, good point on the class 2 vs. 3. That is exactly the note he mentioned is the need for "stabilizer straps". So, he might have a class 2 hitch. Good catch. Either way, I will take your advice and call both companies.

I had a class 3 installed by UHAL which is a hidden hitch. I also have a mobility scooter platform that I use as a basket. The ramp makes loading easy. Works great and comes in real handy.

How much did UHAUL charge you? And did you a light connection.

UHAUL has an online quote that works really well. You enter in your vehicle information and it will give you the prices for all of the towing options they have.
