Hi All,

I know there are a million threads on transmission issues related to 2013 Escapes, Focus, and Fiestas- I'm posting this here because I'm not sure this is a transmission issue-

So across the past year, we've been noticing our '13 FE SE (1.6L) hesitate to accelerate from low speeds. This is usually after turning out of a parking lot or turning the corner from a dead stop.

The car "hesitates" meaning it feels like it's gagging when you press the gas, and then jerks back and forth ALMOST as violently as when somebody is learning to drive manual...

I just changed the plugs at Christmas (5 weeks ago) and hadn't experienced the issue until today. Today, it hesitated, so I eased into the gas which normally helps me get up to speed and it stops, but today, the engine just shut off with the oil and battery dash lights coming on (no check engine light though). I was only in a grocery store parking lot, so I could pull out of the way as the car coasted to a stop, turn it off, and start it back up again. After restarting, it cranked for 2-3 times as long as it usually takes, but it started up and I went home without issue after that.

My question is- is this a typical thing for '13 Escapes? If so, is it engine or trans related? I know the '13 1.6L escapes have a bad rap- this is the first main issue I've had with it since buying it and it has 124K miles on it...

Any advice? Thanks in advance!

Or your emissions canister is full of gas.

Did you pull the codes?
Sorry for the delay- was traveling this week for work.

It actually didn't throw a CEL, so I assumed there were no codes to read, right?

You can get codes stored that don't light up the dash warning light.

If any work has been done under the hood, check your evac lines. They are small and crimp or collapse easy. Try a can of crc ivd and turbo cleaner as well. Yank out the pressure sensor on the intake and dump the whole can. Then take it out and floor it. Pcv valve could be stuck, you can yank the hoses and blow in it to check. Its like a 3way splitter instead of a traditional pcv valve so do your research. If you overfill the gas tank it can permenantly screw up a sensor as well. Those are some things you can check yourself that a code wont identify for you.

Thanks, @Ryan lloyd- I'm going to go get a can of CRC today and try it out. Easy and inexpensive as well.

The tough thing is that the stalling and hesitation happens only every once and a while over the span of a week or two- I'll hopefully have some feedback soon. Thanks!

I go back to the days of setting dwell and replacing automatic choke heaters, but could rahrena8690's problem be a clogged fuel filter or malfunctioning fuel pump? As has been mentioned by murcod not all codes are stored, usually happens when a fault its juuusssst outside the trigger threshold

I'm going to try and check the fuel filter this weekend- I've never tried to find it before. Is it near the spare?

I bet you have a bad ETB....
I have this very same issue. What is a "ETB?"

Also I am getting the "Low Battery" indicator on the dash when turned to accessory. This happens after 5-10 minutes not after an hour as expected.

Would the low batter cause the hesitation and stall from a stop/start? It does not seem to make sense as the engine cranks and starts fine. :nerd:

stalling because of bad wiring

My 2.0 2013 Escape had an issue with stalling two years ago. Engine would sometimes stall at idle or low speeds. Start the engine back and runs ok for a few days.
Turned out it was the wire for one of the MAP sensors. The dealership fixed it and didn't have a problem since. I believe it was for the MAP sensor in the intake manifold.
Wasn't there a recall for 1.6 for the same wire? I believe there is a video about how to fix that wire.

It took a long time to figure out the problem because it could not be reproduced by the mechanic. I used a data logger and sometimes the signals would look strange, the water temperature would have a jitter around that time. I guess the signals were interfering with each other.

I would recommend you start with getting a diagnostic code reading.. This is extremely easy to do and you can get a basic OBDC reader at Harbor Freight for $30. There are great youtube videos to show you how to use the tool. Once you get a reading it might pin point the problem such as faulty ignition coils. I too had a 2013 Escape that I bought new that operated flawlessly for 139k miles. Then the transmission failed just like thousands of posts claim .. and then it blew a head gasket.. which resulted in similar symptoms to what you have described. The blown head gasket causes coolant to enter the cylinder where it causes the engine to miss fire. If you can have someone follow you while you are driving to see if white smoke is coming out of the tailpipe , thats a good indication that the head gasket has blown.
If it has blown , gets Bars Leak Head Gasket repair and pour it in the expansion tank per tge directions. Dont have the gasket replaced as this engine has a faulty design and is not worth the expense to replace. Next step.. trade in the junky Escape for a Tesla.. The Tesla Y is designed to go 1 million miles with minimum maintenance. As the Tesla has no transmission, timing belt, exhaust system, turbo, spark plugs and has been designed by the best engineers on the planet, owners are already reporting putting in excess of 600k miles with little to no problems.. Oh and its a great way to start cleaning up the planet and preventing needless wars over oil.. Good Luck
