About 2-3 years into my 2014 Escape, the low coolant light came on. I checked the levels and they were slightly low so I added some antifreeze. About two months later, the light came on again. So I did the same thing...added some antifreeze. When getting a scheduled oil change, I had them check everything and they found nothing, no leaks. Said sometimes "air" gets into the hoses. I explained that I was adding antifreeze every few months but they claimed they found nothing. The second time, they said they fixed something that was related to a recall I think (could be mistaken about that). Problem persisted. The third time they checked (for free) they again told me there was air in the line but no problems. Flash forward to 2022 I'm still occasionally putting antifreeze in my car even though I'm told there's no leak.

Finally, about six months ago, the temperature light goes on - pull over safely. I do that for about 15 minutes and then continue to drive the car just fine for the next six months. But just today, the light comes on again. I pulled over after only about a minute or two to get to somewhere safely but think the engine is fried. I swear I saw this coming but was repeatedly told there wasn't a problem.

Is this an ongoing problem with Escapes? Is there any recourse or compensation for this? Any advice on who to contact?

What engine do you have?

Are you tightening the cap fully to a slight click?

Yes, for sure. This has been going on for years.

You can check for an open recall using your VIN:
Adding every few months sounds like a low pressure weep, add that to the random overheat and it would lead me to look at the temp sensor located on the back of the head.

take it to a ford dealer. There is a TSB relating to coolant intrusion, which requires a engine replacement. Good luck

Hey everyone, I have a coolant leak that only leaks overnight-allow me to elaborate. When I top it off and go for a long drive 100+ miles and come home to check the coolant level, its still full. However, when I leave the car overnight to cool down ill come back the next day to see that my coolant level was even lower than what it was when i filled it up initially. Anybody got any similar problems?

On the 1.6L if you're not blowing white smoke on start up I would look at the coolant bypass valve.
Those are known to develop cracks which cause a low pressure leak.

I moved your thread to this existing thread on the 1.6L coolant leak.

Is there anyone out there who still has a 2013 Ford Escape? my daughter is still driving it until we can help her get another car. but we are having coolant problems left and right. we got this car in 2020 we would get rid of it if they weren’t payments on it. The coolant doesn’t go out once in a while it is every few days!! And it doesn’t drip out it basically falls out!! it didn’t start doing that until the last few months. Before that it was once in a while that she noticed the coolant was going down and she would replace it but we had no idea that it should take about 60,000 miles or so before you would have to replace Coolant. I am about to take it into the Ford dealership but from what I have seen on this site many people have been having trouble that even Ford cannot find the problem but that was back in 2013 and 14 that I have seen these messages written maybe by now they have found it. I was just hoping that if anybody had recent experiences with this. Thank you.

For what it's worth, I have a '13 Escape SE 1.6L, and it'd been leaking coolant for 6 years - sometimes more, sometimes less, as my mechanic and I steadily worked through all the leaks.

I don't have a list of fixes, but it amounted to steadily replacing hoses and junctions that have since been redesigned, and the final fix recently were some aging clips. I haven't had leaks for a few months now, finally. Not sure if the takeaway for you should be that the coolant pathway is poorly designed, or that there is hope at the end of the tunnel. Either way, I recommend working with an honest and capable mechanic - I had a terrible experience with the dealership on this topic. Good luck!

I merged your thread with one of the existing threads on the 1.6L engine coolant leaks. A quick search will find multiple coolant leak threads. If you have a different engine, let us know and I will move your post.

My wife's Escape was bought new and has had excellent care since purchased (40k miles now). The heater started working very poorly in Feb 2022 then stopped completely. One warm spring afternoon only a few miles from home the overheat alarm went off and we stopped immediately. Checked the coolant reservoir and was bone dry. Loosened the coolant cap and the reservoir filled itself back back up about half way. The temp gage went back to normal so we drove it home. Added coolant and found a youtube on how to "burp" the system by idling and adding coolant. The heater immediately started working and the car ran fine as always. Soon found I had to add about a cup of coolant about every 100miles. Had my dealer pressurize the system during an oil change and he found no visible leaks. Sometime weeks later an SES code came on with a cylinder 3 misfire. I removed cylinder 2 and 3 spark plugs and got 125psi on both cylinders and both plugs looked to be about the same condition. Took it to another Ford dealer who slightly overfilled the reservoir and marked it and had me come back after 100miles. Didn't trust me I guess. It was down about 1-2 inches and said that was normal and it would fill back up to his mark when it cooled. He didn't think I knew how that worked. Won't go there again. A couple times after setting for several days the car would start up very rough and quit. I figure the coolant caused the misfire. I sometimes smell a faint sweet order when 1st started. Other than that the car runs great (and the heater works). I don't want to trade the car and stick the problem with someone else. Been reading about the manifold/block leaks and I suspect its a fairly small leak. A garage said he could probably put a used engine in for around $4k but I no longer trust the 1.6L engine. Really want to try a sealant while the leak is small. Has anyone had success with the sealants.

Sadly coolant is now finding it's way into at least cylinder 3 at this stage and your engine is renown for that as you indicate. There are countless threads in this issue on forums here if you do a search. If you replace the engine with a new or used one I suggest you get a good warranty. Not sure whether you can get hold of a 1.6L engine with the improved block. Sealant is only a band-aid fix.
