My 2013 ford escape 1.6 ltr engine when starting cold the engine revs up about 4000 at which time I tap the accelerator to stop the rapid rpm increase. I fear that the rpm might red line if I don't stop the surge.

Does the MIL (CHECK ENGINE LIGHT) illuminate? It also may be something as simple as a throttle body cleaning.

Thanks for the information, I will print the recall details.
The check engine light is not illuminated as of yesterday, but I am certain that when I do a cold start again the RPM will surge.
