Does any one know the procedure/time for replacing the alternator in the 2015 Ecoboost 2.0 Liter engine?

It looks like a nightmare to remove the belt. What do you need to remove to even get close to the alternator?

I looked at the 1.6 Liter Ecoboost and it looked easy but I needed the extra power of the 2.0 Liter engine and never opened the hood. Looks like the dealer will charge over $1000 to replace the alternator.

Help would ease my mind. I usually have my son replace alternators when the dealer wants $800 and the alternator costs $200.

Thanks for any advice or help.

The alternator looked fairly easy, compared to the old gen 3.0 V6 which was a horrible experience.

Looks like you may need to remove the intake manifold and throttle body, then you'd have access from below to get a bolt or two and the top bolt. Not sure how the belt comes off, either from below or wheel well.

The Platinum warranty costs $13,000 and I was hoping to keep the Escape for quite a while.

I have never purchased an extended warranty and alternators go out at about 50,00 miles (after the 3 year warranty).

Are you sure on this cost? Seems a tad high. :)

Alternators don't 'go out' at 50k miles.

Maybe in days of old...

alternators used to last barely 50k miles ....

I can remember changing 3 of them on my '73 Pinto within 2 years.

The one in my '05 Sable is now at 135k & our '04 Freestar was at 85k when we traded it and the factory unit was still working just fine.

The "newer" ones have better electronics, hard components and quality control than the old ones did and as a bonus you can replace the brushes without having to tear the unit apart.

Any GM car I've had (myself and my wife before meeting me) have needed alternators like cars need tires. Maybe its just small cheap GM cars come with crap alternators. But our Ford Taurus went 120,000 + miles and I don't think I ever had to change it.

But the 50,000 mile thing? Sounds like they are accustomed to Chevys or Pontiacs.

Yes $13,000. The lowest cost extended (3 more years) option was $6,000. Probably power train only and would not cover the alternator.

Kind of scary. Do these warranty people know something we don't?

Where are you? I just signed up for Ford ESP with bulb protection for 8 years / 125,000 miles for $2,910. My car is 8 months/ 12,000 miles into the original warranty. It will go up in price as the original warranty is used up.

You must be outside of North America with that price. Do you have a quote or something you could take a picture of to show us? Unless the dealer you talked with is hoping you wouldn't do your homework. ;)

Let's try to keep this thread on topic. If you want to keep discussing the cost of this extended warranty then I would suggest starting a new thread in the appropriate location. I know I have also added to this off topic discussion. ;)
