Hey, all! We're interested in this neat 2015 Escape but we may deal with a mysterious coolant leak. The owner also mentioned the "Hill assist not available" message and I saw a couple of good threads about that around here recommending a battery replacement.

Has the owner told you that the coolant level keeps dropping and there does not appear to be a leak?

If so run the other way.

Budget for engine replacement. 1.6L? I think they drop another 1.6L in with same design. Then again it might be something simple and you can get a deal.

A 1.6L EB is pretty much a 1.6L EB.
The difference between a 2013-2014 & a 2015 is that it already has the exhaust manifold oil deflector shield which was part of the 2013-2014 recall already on it. There is no "new" design, unlike the 1.5L L4 EB that replaced it.
The rest of the various 1.6L EB recall adds were additional coolant sensors in the engine compartment, different degas tank, hoses with a different design and changes to the AGS.

OP did not indicate if the candidate vehicle was a 1.6. What would you say to the OP on buying a used FE losing coolant with no apparent source?

Pressure test the cooling system to see if you have a hose or valve leaking.
Check the plugs and see if they all look the same.
2.5L & 2.0L EB for that year rarely have coolant issues, the most common problem on the 2015 1.6L EB when it comes to coolant loss is the heater bypass valve body cracking.

Hill Assist error is usually caused by a flaky ABS sensor.

Sorry, it's a 1.6L. Well, the owner is a friend and it's cheap. The pressure test is on top of the list to check. The leak is not bad though but we'll see.

Free?

Seriously, look into all the problems (recalls, TSB's etc.) that engine has had over the years. You could be lucky and it's a cheap fix or be up for a new engine.

Yeah, we'll be digging for any possible issues. He's moving and can't keep it.
Pressure check is definitely a good idea. A new cap fixed my mysterious coolant leak.
