2020 Ford Escape Window Control Buttons Chrome Plating Defect

12023 Views 32 Replies 21 Participants Last post by  Jaxpony
Has anyone besides myself had an issue with the chrome plating on the window control buttons flaking/chipping off? I rarely use my windows since I bought it in Aug 2020 and last week I was going through a drive-thru at my bank and rolled down my window. When I touched the button to roll down the drivers side I felt something sharp and uneven on the button. As I investigated it more the chrome plating pin the buttons has chipped away from the button. In fact every button for all the windows is chipping off. I don't ever use those, surely this is a manufacturer defect. Is there a service bulletin issued for this? I can't find anything anywhere related to this problem. Please advise!

I had this happen too, last week. I've had my escape for 3 months and this happened. Cut my finger on it!!!! Now I have painter's tape covering the button.

I read about this on the Ford Escape facebook group and those that had chipping had them replaced under the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty.

Same here. I took a file and ground it down. Everything about this car is cheap...except the price!

True. The thing that's really pissing me off is AC/Heater. The unit is possessed. It just does whatever it wants. Needs an exorcism!!!

Yes, I had the same problem, the chrome is peeling off the drivers door master switch, on my 2020 Ford escape SEL it has 1600 miles on it.
the dealer replaced the switch free of charge
under the three-year 36,000 mile warranty

Yes I’m glad I’m not the only one. I bought mine brand new last April and noticed this about a month ago. I have an appointment next week to bring it in to ask why it’s happening. Those who have had it fixed how long did it take? Glad to see it’s been covered under warranty.

To actually replace the switch module is about 25 minutes work.
Getting the dealer to do it as a customer satisfaction item without a TSB or an SSM is another story.

On my Fusion, the piano black switch trim panels were bowing because they were about 2mm off in length and my dealer had to fight with Ford over approval even though I had 20 months and 22k miles left on my 3/36 and there was actually a SSM out over the problem.

From the time I brought my 2020 escape to the dealer to have the window switches replaced it took them an hour and a half before I left the facility

Did they have the part to fix it right away or did you have to go back once they ordered it? I have a toddler that will be in tow as they only have M-F day time appointments available trying to plan ahead if I can

I would have to look at the rest, but the one I drove yesterday was missing the chrome on both front window switches, and I'm willing to bet they're all flaked in at least one spot. All of our Ford switches with the chrome flake or rub off, but I have some silver painted tips on a couple of non-escapes and they're fine. I'd be happier with basic black plastic rather than trying to dress it up and have it come apart.

You should contact FORD with your concern maybe they’ll adopt your way of thinking

Yep! I’ve cut my finger more times on this than I can tell you. This last go round was quite the doozy. This car is such a piece of garbage

Ouch! I know that pain. Put some painters tape on the switch til you can get the dealer to replace the switch. They really seem to have cheaped out on this car. Note to self - don’t buy a pandemic car.

Same thing happened to my 2020. I also received a bad cut from one of them. They were replaced under warranty but I’m sure it will happen again. I agree that everything about this car is cheap.

From what I have read here the quality control regarding many things has certainly dropped on the 2020/21 Escapes, whether it is due to Covid...who knows?
The earlier ones were fine to my knowledge.

Mine was built Oct 2019. It happened to the front driver side and front passenger side switches. When it happens again I’m scraping all the chrome off and covering the exposed plastic with black paint.

I am having the same problem. Cut my fingers five times. I am taking it to the dealer next week. This is crazy!
