2022 Escape PHEV order experience

I ordered a plug in hybrid escape SEL with the moon roof on March 8. received the confirmation email on March 9. Dealer said it should take 3-6months to get the car. I haven't heard anything except the July 1 email apologizing for the lack of communication and promising to provide an update every 45 days.

Today I called my dealer, they had no update. I found a number to call Ford Corporate, Gave them the order number and they looked it up. They just repeated what the dealer told me and said if I don't have a VIN number issued by end of sept they will bump me to a 2023.

I'm not mad. I knew the car would take awhile to get. It's a supply chain crisis after all. I'm just lost in how after 5 months they can't provide a clear-to-build date or estimated production date. Really i'd feel a lot better if they just gave me a date. One of the big reasons i wanted the car was the tax credit, this is in jeopardy as Ford nears 200K EVs sold. Yes the current senate bill removes this cap, but it also adds income limits. So one way or another I wont qualify in 2023.

Really the whole experience has been kind of a let down. I was really excited about the car but it doesn't seem like Ford will fulfill the order anytime soon. Starting to consider other non-Ford vehicles as we approach the 2022 clearance time of year. How much longer would you wait?

Sadly this problem is worldwide not only with Ford but with many other mainstream manufacturers. Even the manufacturers in many cases are unable to predict when new vehicles will be available due to parts delays, temporary plant closures due to Covid, shipping port problems etc.
I know you understand all this but it just makes it difficult for Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai and others to give a definitive answer regarding delivery.

I have a VIN, and have had build dates of Jun 12, Jul 25, and now Aug 29th. Getting scared even with that I won't get it this year. In my case it could cost me 15k more if I can't get it this year.

WOW! That is THE most precise info I've seen to date on the overall ordering process: "They just repeated what the dealer told me and said if I don't have a VIN number issued by end of sept they will bump me to a 2023."

The last bit of news (from this site that I read) is that 2023 Escape production is scheduled (or intended) to start in November 2022. That could get delayed if they need to clear out all the not-yet-built 2022 models before stamping parts for the 2023 versions. There are body style differences.

There's a chance you/we may still qualify for the Federal Tax Credit. Tracking site is: Federal EV Tax Credit Phase Out Tracker By Automaker | EVAdoption

If you're not on the X-Plan yet, see if your dealer participates in the X-Plan. My understanding is that you need to be a member of an X-Plan approved organization for 90 days in order to qualify for the X-Plan pricing. I also do not yet have a VIN and likely, we're in no danger of getting a VIN issued any month soon. Point being, you have plenty of time to join an X-plan approved org, get your X-Plan certificate and then sit back and wait for the 90-day period to pass. Need a few resources on the process? No problem. Here you go:

Step 1: Ford X-Plan Partner Companies: Ford X-Plan Partner Companies
Step 2: If you're not a member of a partner company, join one. EAA works.
Step 3: Get the Ford partner code of the org you belong to (or just joined).
Step 4: Enter the partner code on this site: AXZ Plan - Login
Step 5: Generate your very own X-plan certificate and print it or save it to your computer or do both.
Step 6: Sit back and wait your 90 days. On the 91st day, you now qualify for the X-plan. Again, we are in no danger of getting our respective VINs in the next 90 days. I ordered 4 months ago and other than the we-have-no-clue letter from Ford, I have received no info. Even my sales guy has stopped calling every few weeks.

One other thing... you asked "How much longer would you wait?"
The short answer is, I'll wait through 2023 if I have to. Here's why.
My dealer doesn't mark up beyond MSRP. That's much better than the $8K+MSRP on a Toyota Rav4 Prime I've been quoted. Also, the local Toyota dealers do not accept custom configuration online orders. I've also been told (and I believe) that for MSRP only on a Rav4 Prime, I'm looking at 2023 or 2024. No reason to doubt that. I'm in Silicon Valley and have lived through multiple supply chain nightmares. There is no easy fix. Ford still looks pretty darn good, even with all the delays. I want to believe. I want to buy American. I want to love the blue oval since I used to see the Ford World Headquarters building from Michigan Ave on the way to visit my grandparents in Dearborn, who always drove Fords. Have to admit, Ford is making it tough.

Yes i am already on the X plan. Wife's job was able to qualify us.

Yeah when i asked the lady if i'll get the car this year that was her answer. She said they are already doing that on other models.

They can they just dont want to.

This is not a development product for which they need to finish designs and go out and establish a supply chain. Yes it takes a few days to load my sales order into their system, but once thats done any ERP system they could be using to run their factory will be able to show a "clear-to-build" report and provide the production planner an estimated date to place it into the Master Production Schedule, MPS based on the scheduled material receipts for every part on the BOM. They do this with all their orders and use it to forecast their monthly, quarterly, and annual revenues. Also for factory planning for tooling change overs, capital improvements, physical inventory assessments, and holidays. These things can't interfear with production and need to be planned for in advance.

They know an estimated date for every vehical they are going to build for at least the next 12-18 months. Thats how you run a factory. For what ever reason they don't want to share any of this with us who have been waiting for months, some half a year or longer!

How did you come up with that $15K number?
I'm buying it for business use. Canada has incentives on IZEV vehicles where you can deduct 100% in the first year. This year was particularly busy for me work wise, not sure if next year will be. So it would really helpful to reduce my taxable income this year.

Edit: Looks like one of the Titanium PHEV at my dealer is finally being assembled. Started production last week. Order confirmed Dec 31, 2021....

I ordered mine on January 18th. The salesperson guessed it would be "a couple of months." I've called about every three or four weeks since April, and every time I've been told my "production date" has been pushed back by two or three weeks---now August 29th. That makes a total of fifteen times it's been moved back. I did some research and found the Louisville plant, where it's scheduled to be made, is up to full production and appears to have been so for several months. I'm angry, not so much by the delay, but by the TOTAL LACK OF COMMUNICATION from Ford. Even if they can't tell me anything they should, at least, tell me they can't tell me anything, something---send an email, a post card, smoke signal---SOMETHING! I would cancel the order but it's like when you stand in a line at the bank or grocer's---once you've invested so much time it's hard to just walk away. I can tell you this, this is probably the last Ford product I will ever buy. Again, not because of the delay but because they won't even show me the common courtesy of an explanation and/or apology.

I ordered mine Jan 6 and have no production date, VIN , or anything. I totally agree with you.
Now I wonder about a 2023 and how long to wait for that. Very frustrating. I call every other month but no news. Same with the dealer.

I'm due to receive my second "We have no clue" letter from Ford on Aug 16th. We'll see if Ford can manage to even send an electronic notification on time, as scheduled, as they stated they would do in the first letter I received from them on July 2nd.

Oh, and one more bit of news...

If you take delivery after January 1, 2023 that $7,500 Federal tax credit will likely no longer apply.

Here's why: The Inflation Reduction Act stipulates that 50% of the battery parts and 40% of the minerals have to come from U.S. shores or a country with which we have free trade agreements, and must be done so by December 2023 and December 2024, respectively. Those figures will go up by 10% each year of the program.

The problem: Currently, 90% of minerals used in EVs are processed in China, according to Katherine Stainken, vice president of policy for the Electrification Coalition, per Spectrum News.

Ref: EV Tax Credit in Inflation Reduction Act Very Limiting: ‘Most Vehicles Immediately Ineligible’

With loan interest rates increasing and the Federal Tax credit likely going away, demand should decrease making a Ford Escape PHEV easier to get, that is, if Ford ever chooses to schedule any Escapes for production. (Scroll to the bottom of the page on this link: Production Week Scheduling Information)

A Toyota RAV4 Prime is automatically excluded, unless it meets the battery test above and is assembled in the US. That's good news if price isn't a concern for you and you're just looking for decreased demand leading to an increase in supply of RAV4 Primes. Both the Ford Escape PHEV and the Toyota RAV4 Prime are non-turbocharged 2.5-Liter 4-cyl Atkinson-cycle engines. If you like the Ford Escape PHEV engine, you'll like the Toyota RAV4 Prime engine and vice versa. Doesn't really matter, though, since both vehicles are automotive unicorns.

As is, the Inflation Reduction Act should pretty much kill the electric car market. Let's hope the derived regulations are modified/corrected before they become effective on Jan 1, 2023.

I have seen them listed at Dealers inventory on the FORD site locally.

Well, I ordered my Titanium PHEV on March 25, received Ford acknowledgement March 28, received VIN and a May production date email on April 14th. Since then, I've received 12 emails and the latest production date now Aug 29th. Seems to be a common story. Good news is that somehow Ford is keeping in touch with me every couple week or so. I sometimes wonder if they are actually making any PHEV models. Occasionally I see one listed 100 miles away, by the time I see it, it is gone. Only reason I'm sticking with Ford is that it is the only PHEV I can tow behind my RV.

I ordered a RAV4 Hybrid on December 14th 2021 for my wife got an acknowlegment on January 5th 2022. I did not get anything news until March 21st to tell me the vehicle was built. Then they told me it would be ready at the dealer between 3/26 & 4/1. I was in the dark until the dealer called me on 4/20/22 to tell me it was at the dealership! So Ford or Toyota, they all have issues. I ordered my Escape PHEV on 04/11/2022 and production was postpone 10 times, now maybe September 5th... Good luck.

At the rate it's going, I might get offered a Rav4 prime before my Escape PHEV ever gets built. And that dealer only gets 1 Prime a year.

Paul, where is "locally"? When I click on 80099 it takes me to a general site for the mid Atlantic. I did speak with one guy at my dealership in Las Vegas and he said Ford is only shiping to California and New York (as if Las Vegas isn't practically a suburb of Los Angeles.

I gave up and canceled my order. bought a new Honda Accord 2.0t instead. Not nearly as good on gas but it sure does make me smile when i push the throttle. My reason for canceling is i Just didnt know when or if my car would be built. The tax credit was a big reason i was buying an Escape PHEV. The new law that just puts that in jeopardy due to A-where the battery materials are sourced from (not sure Ford even knows yet!) and B- income limits on those who can qualify. This puts taking delivery after Dec 31, 2022 into high risk.

I don't think Ford is incentivized to hurry up and schedule more Escape PHEV production any time soon. I understand the cost to manufacture and deliver these to the dealers doesn't leave them a lot of margin, heck they may even be loosing money on some of us who locked in our price before they increased them back in Q2, 2022. Ford, like any company would, is going to prioritize orders and production which help them to meet or exceed their guidance to the street.

Good luck guys!

I certainly don’t blame you giving up. I am laid up for awhile (torn quadriceps) so will wait for awhile for the Escape Titanium PHEV to see what happens. Meanwhile, I will keep my options open. Good luck with the Honda.

I have a 2021 Honda Clarity PHEV ( size of an Accord) and I’m very pleased with it. 60 miles per charge in the summer, 45 in the winter. 45 - 50mpg gas. 350 miles on a seven gallon tank of gas only. Unfortunately, they stopped making them after 2021. Pretty quick in sport mode. Paid MSRP price and got large federal tax credit.
I at least got some hopeful news. The build date of Aug 29th I was given 3 weeks ago hasn't slipped yet. But that's still another two weeks for nothing else to go wrong. And assumes they don't just wait until its supposed to be built to update the new estimated date.

My Escape Titanium PHEV's date was pushed back again on Aug 10 to Sept 12 week.
I will wait to see if Ford will deliver my order before the Treasury Dept gives battery material/sourcing guidance near year end before I give up on my Escape Titanium PHEV order.
If so I'll start looking at a Hybrid that doesn't rely on any credit, or maybe a 2023 Bolt EUV for next year that may get 1/2 the 2023 credit.
Tim at LongMcArthur had said Ford planned to build 200 Escape PHEVs in the Oct 3 to Oct 24 build out, and 17,800 Gas Escapes during that build out. So it appears not many PHEVs get produced compared to Gas Engine ones.
