Auto Start Stop Function Ford Escape 2020

Had a quick question on the Auto Start Stop functionality of the new Ford Escape 2020 1.5 Liter SEL AWD. I have had several Escapes (2014, 2-2017s and now a 2020). I have read about and experienced many of the issues discussed on the 2017 regarding the engine Start Stop functionality and so far have been able to resolve them. That being said the functionality, when working, all seems to be consistent. I come to a red light, stop and the engine cuts off. When I release the brake, the engine engages and I take off. On the new 2020, I have noticed when I stop and the engine shuts off, when I release the brake, the engine does not re-engage ( turn back on). It only re-engages (turns back on) when I press the gas. I have sat at a stop sign for two minutes with my foot off the brake and the engine never re-engages until I press the gas. When I read the user manual, it stated the engine would engage when I release the brake. So my question is whether Ford has changed the way it works and the user manual is wrong, or whether this might indeed be an issue that should not be happening. Has anyone else experienced this? Since I am new, let me apologize in advance for any posting rules or other posting courtesies I might have missed or neglected.

I know but what he related is a bit difficult for me to understand. My guess is bad battery until I learn more.
So maybe "synced" wasn't a proper definition of the problem. They did the battery reset when it was jumped and that's when the connection with auto s/s was lost.
I did ask about the battery life and it going bad soon, and I was assured that they tested the battery and it was good. The auto s/s has been working fine since I picked up the car from the dealer earlier today.. let's hope it continues that way.

That's what I suggested earlier #11...it had been sitting on the lot for some time, a couple of months as it turned out, and, as you say, they needed to jump start it before they sold it to you, so obviously the battery was very flat and during your use since it probably did not charge to it's optimum to allow the stop/start function to operate.

The 'auto S/S module not syncing' they are talking about was just another way of saying the battery was not fully charged so the S/S did not work but they probably did not want to admit that.

All the dealer did this time was recharge the battery properly as they should have done when they delivered the car to you and that is why your stop/start is now working I would suggest.

Sometimes when a battery is allowed to run flat like that it never fully repairs itself when charged so I would ensure it now holds it's charge and if some technology like the S/S system fails again I would demand a new battery under warranty.

Also, it is possible the battery issue could have been the cause of the low heat problem regarding your steering wheel. Please advise of any change there.... :p

Search for "Ford battery management system." Lots on the reset required when replacing 12v batteries, which would sync the system to the new battery's charge/discharge characteristics. It makes sense that a run-down battery might forget.

I actually am quite familiar with the BMS reset having been educated here on it when my 2013 was due for a battery. I just never heard or read the term “synced” for the process. An earlier poster suggested that it may be something new for the 2020 MY and I am searching for more detail.

My wife's car is a 2020 Titanium Escape so although I am familiar with I don't drive it enough to be extremely familar with it. My 2019 Ford Edge with tech package etc, on the left instrument area screen if you set it to fuel mpg I believe it is it will tell you why S/S did not kick in. In example, battery charge too low, Climate requires AC temp, upgrade to severe and such. So there are numerous reasons that S/S will not cut in. In my case I always urn it off soon as car starts but car sits a lot so I use it to test battery level. Will turn it on and see if battery charge comes up as reason it doesn't cut in. I DID NOT see a similar notification are on the Escape instruments for S/S.

By the way a good thing to remember at car wash. Turn the Auto brake OFF if roller rolls your car through!

I am not at all familiar with any display that will tell the owner why S/S failed to engage. As you stated, the manual suggests that there can be 10 or so key parameters. For me and my driving, it is the battery SOC. My testing has suggested that the battery SOC must be at a minimum of 70% for the S/S to engage on my 2018.
Ralph, This you tube shows what I am talking about although on a different vehicle than mine. How pop up message advise why the Start/Stop is not operating. On my Edge it is in the left information screen when that is on MPG Fuel screen setting.

This is the information window I described. You get the activated or inactivated pop up in any setting when you turn it on or off.

This is the type message you get when you stop if S/S doesn't shut engine off. You only get it when information screen os set to Fuel Use

I see what you are talking about now. I have something similar on my 2018 Titanium. Nothing on the dask panel screen but the disable swith lights when it is pushed. I had thought you were talking about a display setting that among other things said something like "S/S disabled due to low batter charge" or any of the many other parameters.
Hello, I am the new owner of a new to me Escape and have a couple questions. My auto stop/start has not worked in a week or so. When I go into the settings on the steering wheel, it says the car is charging? My car is not a hybrid, full gas. Should I have my battery tested, or is there a reset of that system somewhere?

Also, I have a blue green one, the dealership called it green, I call it blue. Does anyone know the actual paint color?
Happens if you do more around town driving. Some highway driving will charge battery to bring it back. Completely normal.
Probably Dark Persian Green. Neat color.

Oh, welcome!

That would make sense but I drive 25 miles to work and back every day and 20 of those miles are highway going 70-75
I would expect that would be enough to keep the charge. Wonder if it is on the way out based on previous owner's driving habits.

I agree, going to have to make an appointment this weekend. Thank you.

I moved your new thread to this existing thread on your start/stop issue. The New Member Intro is just for introducing yourself and your Escape.

Fair enough, I appreciate it!

SOLVED Dropped it off a local Ford dealer, new battery in the car and we are good to go!
