Broiled By Moonroof

My 2021 Escape PHEV came with an unwanted moonroof. Here in South Carolina, that leads to a very hot interior during the summer; even once you get going and the AC catches up you can still feel the heat coming off the moonroof shade.
Solution: Acquire some Styrofoam insulating batts from Lowes, cut to size and carefully close the moonroof shade. I just did that, I'll report back on the results in a few days!

I have a 2021 Escape with the panoramic sun roof and I live in sunny Florida. I leave the sun shade open always since it makes the interior feel more open and light. I order all my cars with sun roofs.

I did install 3M Crystalline 90% tint (almost clear) on the sunroof and the front door windows . The 3M rejects most of the infrared heat rays and all of the skin damaging UV rays from the sun.

I don’t notice any significant or objectionable heat coming from the sun roof with the sunshade open especially after adding the 3M.

I would think that you will feel much more heat from the windshield and the door windows than the roof with the sunshade closed.

Finally a sunny say to park outside in. And yes, the insulation works as I had hoped, the AC catches up much quicker, there is no more broiling effect, and the shade becomes cool to the touch once the ac catches up. This results in a more comfortable cabin, and most likely better fuel mileage/electrical range.
I actually found the AC to be pretty reasonable power wise. About 1.2KW once things have cooled down. 1.7KW peak. Compared to 3K and 7K peak for the heater.

this is a great option. get a tint that will reject as much heat as possible.
