Hello all.

Just bought a 2013 Escape SEL 2.0L FWD. It has 193,000 Kms and sadly, I don't know if the transmission has ever been drained and filled or flushed in its entire life. It currently has an evap selenoid MIL code, but otherwise no other issues. (BlueDriver resder)

Idles smooth drives fine. Decent mileage (around 10L/100Kms mixed) However the transmission surges a little on shift from 1 to 2...and then again (half the intensity) between 2 and 3. No surges/stutters/etc for all other shifts.

Just got under the hood to take a look at various service items today and found the top of the transmission, around the vent outlet, to be covered in fluid. Would this be an overfill? or something else? I don't see anything leaking, around the head/engine, etc.

I can't get to drop the transmission fluid for another week, but I'm wondering if this is a sign of a greater issue? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Definitely change the fluid ASAP. Don't do a flush just an exchange. I assume that there are no puddles on the ground. This is pretty normal for the mileage and is just normal fumes accumulating near the vent. My 2017 has a different cap on the tranny and collects some residue.
I think you are on the right track with a transmission fluid change.
You do not necessarily need to do a flush, just drain and refill if you are doing it yourself. Plenty of info regarding the method here if you do a search. ;)

Just an update to close this off...Cleaned everything up. Car came with an aftermarket sound insultation splash guard....that was soaked with transmission fluid. Tossed in the garbage. Cleaned everything. Performed a Drain-n-Fill of the transmission. Immediate better shifting. Immediate better fuel economy. After 3 weeks, inspected underside and complete engine as I needed to change the evap purve valve assembly and it was still spotless.

Still has a rough shift from 2 to 3, but that seems fairly common on these transmissions, so not sure if that will ever be addressed. Otherwise runs great now. Definitely an overfilled transmission. Fluid was pretty black too. Happy I changed it.
