My 2020 Titanium Hybrid sounds like this, and Service says that after checking with "the hotline" (w/e that means) that this is considered "normal operation". I disagree. Anyone else have this model and trim, and have this same sound?

Marbles?

To add some more info:
-it has been making the rattling noise regardless of ambient temperature, whether the a/c is on or not, or whether the engine is warmed up or not -- if the motor is running, the knocking is there
-I picked the vehicle up from the dealer last night. Spoke with service mgr for a while, he said he did not work on the vehicle but would come outside as i started it, and sure enough he immediately said "ok yeah that does not sound normal-it sounds like something is loose", so at least now someone agrees with me and maybe they'll figure it out
-I also complained about my fordpass constantly throwing 'Vehicle is in Deep Sleep Mode' errors. They found a tsb to reflash the communication module. So far it has not given me the error again, but it's only been 12 hours...

Was the A/C on? I've had older vehicles where the A/C compressor made sounds like that.

There's a thread on noise from the AC compressor that sounds similar; what do you think? Scroll down for videos.

I just noticed your video. its hard to tell with a compressor sounding item in the back and also maybe lost of qty due to a cell phone but would you describe it as sounding like a diesel engine? That is exactly the same noise mine is making. It doesnt sound like something is loose almost like its a diesel VW. So maybe its suppose to be like that i dunno.

Yep- same sound. 2020 titanium hybrid. 1100 miles, just started. Listened carefully with hood open. At idle, and under acceleration. Just wondering if a better grade of fuel will help. Please advise/share.
Note- just joined this site because of the noise, search revealed others with concern.

i haven’t taken to dealer, but honesty I’m wondering if it’s a heat-pump compressor? I assume these use a heat pump for heating? Scroll compressors can sound like this In certain conditions.

December 18, 2020 Ford issued a service bulletin on this concern.

SSM 49411 - 2020 Escape - HF45 Transmission - Rattle Noise On Cold Start
Some 2020 Escape vehicles equipped with a HF45 transmission may exhibit a rattle noise on cold start up when only when engine is running. This noise may be more prevalent in cold weather conditions, typically at or below 0°C (32°F). Engineering is currently working to resolve this issue. Inform customers that Ford is working on a solution expected in January. In the interim, let the customer knowthat the vehicle is safe to drive, and schedule a follow-up appointment with the customer for late January. Once the solution becomes available, contact the customer and confirm the service appointment is going forward. Monitor OASIS for updates. Transmission replacement may not correct this concern.

I thought I was going crazy hearing this and my Escape is making the SAME noise. I noticed it in early November on one of the first cool/cold days. To confirm, when the car switches to "electric" mode the sound goes away right?

I first thought something was loose under the hood (some type of plastic cover or something) but played around and nothing seemed loose.

Is there any more detail on the Service Bulletin in terms of vehicle production dates, etc?

Hello everyone. My sister has a 2020 Ford Escape SE Sport hybrid, built 09/2020. Her's made the rattling noise this morning at cold startup. I did some research and found a Manufacturer Communication issued on December 18th, 2020, regarding this issue. Here’s the link to the document: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2020/MC-10184649-0001.pdf
Hope this helps. Happy hypermiling.

Appreciation for your valuable information! I am having exactly the same problem, and the dealer was denying that Ford admitted any such problems reported.
Being able to point to the NHTSA posting silenced that push-back and now they are saying the January resolution has not arrived.
Also, I note that the dealer is now saying that qualified technicians are impossible to find and that there is a 1-2 month queue for major work.

I don't know about you guys, but this noise on my Titanium Hybrid is LOUD. Like, you can hear it from inside the house while the car is warming up outside. I took it in and got the same SSM 49411 bulletin that says a fix is (was) expected in January. :( This is just really disappointing. The rest of the car seems great (so far).

Yes, agreed. Mine is very loud, and to be honest, it sounds like a piece of junk, rattling at a stop light or in a parking lot. I've been buying and driving Fords almost exclusively for the last ~20 years and this is the first one I've had any issues with. Ranger, all 4 gens of Escape, Fusion Sport, Focus, all with no issues until this one. This is the first time I've purchased the first model year of a redesigned model, but that will not happen again.
