My dealer told me that a rock must have hit the ac compressor and it now has a hole in it. They said it would be $1400 to replace the compressor. Does this price seem right? I'm in Indiana

For a dealer not unusual, I'd try an independent shop since they can also do the work.
Last compressor I had replaced ran ~$900 and included the receiver/dryer as well, RockAuto shows the Motorcarft compressor right around $500 (dealer list is $894.00) and a third party at $400.
Are you sure they didn't say condenser rather than compressor?
It's hard to imagine a rock strike on the compressor if the lower shield is in place.
