Oil/coolant smell inside and stumbling engine

1075 Views 11 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  DDS-029
I just bought a 2015 ford escape SE from a dealer and inside is a smell like exhaust gas or coolant and the engine is stumbling when i accelerate over 50 MPH. I saw in carfax they made or change a bypass to the coolant and the level of coolant is decreasing not so fast but nothing leaking under car. Has anybody this problem so far and fix it?

First question what engine.
Get this back to the dealer you bought it from and get it checked for coolant ingestion.
Yep...hopefully it is not the dreaded coolant intrusion issue but as @jpohlman said you need to get it back to the dealer asap. If it is behaving this way just after purchase there is every chance the dealer was aware of the issue especially if it was a Ford dealer.
Not sure of the regulations in the US but if this is the case I would demand my money back rather than trust them to fix the issue.
It’s a 1.6 T. I test the car and he did that stumbling from then but i wasn’t sure is not from my foot accelerating. The smell i didn’t realize. If you sign the contract no money back. I bought from them a power train warranty for a year or 12 k miles. They are a Jeep and Dodge dealers. What i see on google can be the head gasket who let the coolant in fire chamber. This one should be included in the warranty.

The 1.6L turbo were renown for coolant leaks into the cylinder head due to failed head gaskets caused mainly by cracked blocks due to a bad design and, yes, it should be covered under your warranty so I would be returning the car. The smell you experience could be from burnt coolant seeping from the cylinder head join.
If this is the issue it is an expensive repair involving replacement of the block or possibly the whole engine so if you have a 3rd party warranty hopefully you will not have any issues with a claim.
Don't be talked into a bandaid fix of just replacing the cylinder head gasket if the block is cracked.

This is how is looking after i take off the plastic protection. It’s look like is wet/bleeding in left side(this photo) and the right side as well. I know that here is the gasket.

That is obviously where the smell is coming from. Point this out to the dealer and also advise them that you are losing coolant and are now aware of cracked block issues causing coolant intrusion with this model in particular so it needs investigation.
Thank you for help. I will go to the dealer this days to deal with this engine.
Please let us know the result as it helps others here. :)

Used cars are sold as is with no implied warranty. Unless you bought the 3 day return period usually between 250 to 500 extra.
Hope the extra warranty you bought helps you out with this.
If your dealer is good then he'll work with you and give you an exchange. Good luck.
I'd check state/local laws for future reference at least. I need to take my own advice. Last I knew, here in Michigan, you had four days, no questions asked, full refund, return.
