Next time the shudder appears, engage sport mode on transmission. This should cause the transmission to down-shift and shudder should disappear. My wife's 2.0 AWD has this issue when driving around town at about 45-50MH on flat terrain and then when going up a slight incline transmission doesn't "downshift " to compensate for added load and torque converter shudders before downshifting. Depressing throttle petal should also get the transmission to downshift eliminating the torque convertor shudder. My wife's car has only 24K miles and I plan bring it to dealer to see if there is a transmission software upgrade available to TCM module to correct. Demosan

As @demosan said in his last posts over 4 years ago, he felt that this was normal behaviour and was due to Ford trying to get the best fuel economy by allowing the car to hang onto the higher gears longer but this can cause the car to labour/shudder at lower speeds when gently accelerating especially on a slight slope in normal auto mode. Apparently there is no software update to eliminate this.
As he suggested the 'shuddering' will be eliminated by 'kicking' the car down a gear or engaging Sports mode which results in the car hanging onto the lower gears longer.
To my knowledge all the 2017 to 2019 models do this, mine does anyway and I do not consider it a fault, only a quirk of the transmission.
I drive just about everywhere in Sport mode and do not really notice any difference in gas consumption but certainly notice the difference in throttle response and smoother running. :)
You could also try changing the transmission fluid if it has not been done yet as this has helped many with this issue if it is excessive.

2019 Ford Escape AWD 2.0 Titanium - 50k

Started developing shutter at 47k miles while accelerating in 30-50mph range. More noticeable going up hill. Took to one dealership and they said nothing wrong. Took to another to have them check out front cv axle joints, motor mount, and transmission. Ended up being transmission and fully covered under the 6 year/60k powertrain warranty. Took almost 2 weeks but they did full trans rebuild which included new torque converter, drive plates and assembly, pump assembly, etc... (i have the whole parts list).

Some notes on the invoice:
Trans showed no issues on diag, but tech could feel issue during drive test. "FOUND TCC SLIPPAGE TORQUE CONVERTER CYCLING ON AND OFF ON ACCELL AND STEADY CRUISE" Fluid and line pressure OK. Removed main control cover and main control, found TCC sludge in bottom of case and all solenoids. Removed trans and found heavy sludge on magnet and filter. pump gears scored. wear on input shaft.

So if they are just changing your fluid, they might just be buying time. I would make sure you get complete transmission checked before power train warranty expires or hope you have ESP.

Now that it is fixed, it drives like new again.
