Off road tires

I saw this E concept. I'm digging the wheel/tires. As much of a city suv this is (the old E looked more off roady/aggressive), I'd like to get some a/t tires I think.... (I bet this has been talked about already, huh?)

Anyone have them on their E?

I think this concept has 18"s?

Are you pleased with the smooth, quiet ride on the freeway, and gas mileage in your Escape? I have a Ranger with tires similar to those Toyos, Firestone Destination ATs. I can do mild rock climbing with them, but on the freeway and city arterials you definitely notice the bumpy ride. It also reduces my MPG by 1-2 on the freeway. I have been on forest service trails in the Escape with the stock Continentals, and they were OK, but I would suggest something in between unless you are planning a lot of off-road. Something like the Firestone Destination LE or similar is better for off road but still more road friendly.

I actually get my E tomorrow. I have some nice tires on my current, 2005 E, I keep forgetting which. I've had a Raptor and didn't mind the noise and harshness, but the mileage was pretty crap.

I guess I like the look of the A/T tires. The rugged look of that concept, looks good. I guess I could compromise on some rugged all seasons like the ones you listed. And for the winters here...I am going to get snow tires..so no real A/T tire needed for snow, just looks and some "mud/trails"

We have a few OTV parks and I have some land to go off road/mud. But I haven't done it in any of my cars. I know if I did, I'd need a real 4x4 system, not the "smart" awd one, so more Jeep or older ford w/ solid axles.

I'd give my left arm to be able to put BFG All Terrains on my Escape at some point. Gonna need 17" rims though (or possibly have to go down to 16's - Ouch!) I have the factory 18's. Anyone know the largest tire size that will fit without rubbing? Bolt pattern, offset, other dimensions of the factory wheels?

People have put 20"s on.

I really think someone needs a lift kit, OR the level kit for the front. I'd be okay going to 16" wheel w/ aggressive tire but the E in the first post was running 18"s with custom springs. I emailed the company to get more info on the springs, if they lowered or raised it. They haven't gotten back to me.

Someone mentioned this quite awhile ago. But, there is a Ford Kuga lift kit available. Ford KugaÂ*-Â*delta4x4 this page has more information on it. They even say they have an aluminum underbody protection. I have no clue if anybody has gotten anything from them, but I don't think so. Shipping would a pain in the wallet though.

Edit: http://shop-ru.delta4x4.de/product_info.php?products_id=309946 is the page to buy it. 450 dollars however, no shipping seems okayish.

I've been obsessing over this a little too much lately. I'd actually prefer some tires that are a little more aggressive than those (like BFG All Terrains), but either way, I found that vehicle and the guys who built it...

Scroll down to the second vehicle: Concept Vehicles - Vaccar - Automotive Artistry

I have no idea if they have any tire rub with those tires on there, but they definitely could seeing as how it's only a "concept" (see the photo of the passenger side front tire too). They also put some custom springs on there to maybe help make some room under the truck.

Personally, I just want the biggest, most aggressive tire I can get without doing any suspension mods. Doesn't seem like there's much opportunity to play around with that too much.

What is your sidewall height? Any rubbing? You could get around 1.5" lift with the right set!

6.48 inch sidewall. 6.5% taller. I passed on the wider part, everyone else was rubbing with that, and I do not like rubbing at all with all the mud here I have enough issues.
Here are the specs on this size in inches.
______________Stock ________Aftermarket size ____change
Diameter _______27.2__________ 29____________ +6.6%
Width _________9.25 __________9.25 ___________0
Sidewall ________5.09 _________6.48 ________+27.3% This is huge, smooths out the rough parts of the road
Circumference ___85.3__________ 90.9________ +6.6%
Revs/Mile ______742.5_________ 696.9________ +6.5%

I do have a touch of rubbing where the liner is pushed in a little from some damage on the bottom of the bumper. Planning on taking that apart and finding out what is causing the push into the wheel compartment. All the other signs are that it just clears the mud from the wheel well better.
I added some pictures of the stock sized snowtires on the stock rims for comparison. These really fill out the wheel wells, and would have no rubbing if it was not for the damage on the passenger front bumper. Planning on taking a metal fabrication class at the college to use the equipment and make a new splash plate at least, might see how much room is really in those wheel wells and make some inserts if it would be an advantage.

Well I already talked to the lady and I'll be doing 16s with BFGs now too once the stockers are done. Thanks for taking the leap. My current car tires got me stuck this morning pulling out of my apt garage. The plows put about 2.5' of snow in front of my exit. I was able to get out after awhile.

I'll be selling my 18" PVDs after I get the 16"s!

Wow op, that looks awesome! I have to assume that you get some scrapping going over bumps and definitely at full lock(turning). Looks great though!

Edit: Oops, I didn't read the full thread before posting..lol.. That's fantastic you're not getting much scrapping.

OK been out of the loop here for a bit, but they are a bit loud, less so than studded snow tires, but at the right speeds 28-32 they sing like crazy. Gets some looks for sure. It is not a heavy off roader, but 3 flats from July until snow season had my mind set that my road eats all seasons. I rub slightly at a little less than full lock, on off camber turns. Hit 3 times on large fast bumps. Now in the mud it gets a little clogged up in there, more so with larger rocks but all in all not too bad. Getting ready to make a couple changes so we have less issues taking it fishing and hunting. Nothing too heavy, but the mud in Maine can get bad at times when you are miles from anyone. Today we went out exploring and our hitch found a huge rock that was hidden in the mud. No issues as long as you do not try the rough stuff or to go too fast.
Bad notes is that I have some sounds from what could be the control arms. Might just need some more grease, but the new ones most likely are "sealed" so I am looking at upgrades while I am at the replacements.
