Looks like Ford announced CarPlay and android Auto coming to Sync 3

How do you know you didn't get a beta copy of the update? There could be bugs that you haven't come across yet. I personally would wait for the Ford official update.

Well if it's beta it's working well for me, and just because I updated before the official release doesn't mean I won't be able to update to the released version if it isn't the same. I think you will find that this is the release that Ford for whatever reason is not releasing (I suspect the USB hub's for Carplay is very short supply) I don't use Apple products so it's of no importance to me that updating to this leaked update doesn't give me Carplay.

I have to echo this as well, for myself. I think that as the tech in cars evolves more, you will see that this whole beta/leaked/whatever software thing will become a lot more common (like it is in other industries).

Companies, like Ford or anyone else, don't just complete software and send it out into the wild. They don't event completely rely on their own internal testing. So... in general, in life, if a thing is had by some and wanted by others... that thing will find a way to those who want it.

I am not completely sold on Android Auto... lots of Pros and Cons at least at this stage. But I love that I have access to it now and I love some of the AA-unrelated Sync3 improvements.

Ford is just really botching this whole thing. I talked to my dealer and they assured me that all I have to do is connect it to Wifi and do the update.

When I asked if its even officially out they said yes, which I do not believe is true.

When I asked if I need a hardware update for CarPlay, they said no, it should work on its own, which I know Ford has already stated you will need hardware update for the Apple devices.

Not only do they keep changing when its coming out, not only is there no clear information on it, but their dealers also have no idea what is going on and telling their customers information that is incorrect.

You do not say what phone you are using. If android what the dealer told you is correct (when it becomes available). Check your my owner page and you should get a notice there if it is available for your car. Having said that, I had a long discussion with my service manager the other day. He says they are struggling too with lack of information from Ford. It could be or it simply is a line that the dealer is using to deflect criticism.

I don't know, sorry... I had my car fully running (I did the update while I drove home from work and it took about 20 minutes to complete).

#111 ·
I did the update to Sync 3 2.2 last Friday via USB. Instructions said to leave my Escape running the whole time, and I did. Took about 19 minutes.

EscapeDavid,

Where did you get the info to get the usb files? ford.owner states my V1.0 is up to date.

I'm lost. Want to get Android Auto running.

Tnx Reno55. If for some strange reason the update goes bad, how does one get back to the previous version that was functioning?

#116 ·
That most likely should be answered by the Ford IVT folks. My guess is dealer. FWIW I am waiting for the non-bootleg version for that and other reasons.

If you follow the link from my earlier post, the versions are linked to from there for nav/non-nav.

In most situations, if something goes wrong, it simply won't install.

If by some chance you do get it installed in a non functioning way, a dealer trip will be needed (same as a botched install of officially released updates).

I just bit the bullet and installed the leaked update (nav version) linked here:
Unofficial Update- Sync3 v2.2 with Android Auto and Apple*Car Play

Can confirm that it seems to be working fine thus far (apart from the apparently widely observed issue with the OEM nav interface not being available for some time), having tested it out briefly this evening with Android Auto.

I think the OEM map interface may be essentially reinstalling itself after the Sync update, and that causes the delay. Took quite a while for mine to come up after installing 2.2, but it's been fine ever since.

Does anyone know if the new USB hub puts out more amps for charging then the old one? I'm using AA, so I don't need it for the phone, but the existing USB doesn't put out enough juice to really charge my phone. If I'm lucky, it just stays at the same level while plugged in. Having the display mirrored instead of using the phone display may help a little, but it really needs more power.

I guess this update doesn't apply to my 2017 Edge since I'm running a slightly earlier version of the firmware (2.0 instead of 2.2) and this upgrade specifically targets 1.0/1.1. According to the Ford owner site it says my firmware is the latest (Sync 3 v2.0 dated July 1, 2016). I sure hope that an upgrade path from 2.0 to 2.2 becomes available since 2.0 has some issues and there are certainly areas for improvement.

New to this forum, but have been following the CarPlay update news since I got my 2016 Escape in June. What B57 wrote is interesting because I grilled a customer service rep for Ford today for about 30 minutes and eventually got a non generic response telling me that the official sync3 update for 2016 Fords is being delayed until further notice.

I guess Fords internal communications are as good as Trumps with his National Security Team and I need to learn how to leave well enough alone. The email I received from Ford about over air the updates was sent to me yesterday morning. Just for fun, I went on the Sync site today and did a Live Chat - Meaghan said that there has not been a release date announced. So I'm right or I'm not. Yes I am, no I'm not. No you're not, yes you are.

Food for Thought:

1) New York City appears likely to get the 2nd Avenue Subway (or at least the first part of it) in the next few days. It's only about a century late, but they do appear set to make their "by the end of 2016" deadline...

2) I'll have to admit that Ford was actually correct when they said, "Owners of 2016 vehicles equipped with SYNC 3 will have an opportunity to upgrade later in the year." It's just that they didn't specify the "opportunity" would come to us in the form of an online leak of the software package!

Happy New Year, everybody...

Sync3 Update Success ... no CarPlay Yet

I updated my Sync3 software from v.1 to v. 2.2 last night using an update link found on Reddit. There were several mirrors as well as a link to a Ford binaries URL.

After watching a YouTube video on my MacBook Pro Retina, I chose to use a Google Drive mirror because the file structure of the unzipped files put the update files into a SyncMyRide folder below the autoinstall executable. The download from Ford's binaries URL unzipped into a single hierarchy showing the install files with a path indicating a subfolder. I haven't seen that before. Your experience may be different using Windows. I can not yet post links or images.

Now I need the new USB module HC3Z-19A387-B but there was only 1 in stock in Northern California and it was being held for a car in for service. I found a Lincoln alternative GJ7Z-19A387-B that seems to be equivalent except for white light around the USB ports instead of the Escape's blue light. Again, 1 in stock in Southern California and, again, special ordered for a customer. There also seems to be a part for a Ford F-150 with a single port but I didn't pursue that option.

I went ahead and ordered the HC3Z-19A387-B from my local dealer (about $80 list) and expect it in several weeks. As others have noted, the part is on national backorder. One parts department said that 315 were being shipped today form the original packager. That's not many for a national audience. Maybe Ford is delaying the software update until general availability to avoid disappointing those of us waiting for CarPlay. That would seem to be a bit shortsighted since the USB module update is not needed for Android Play.

When I was looking for the USB module, I found a white one at Walt Sweeney Ford in Cincinnati. They were very good to work with. Email parts@waltsweeneyfordparts.com and they might get one for you quicker (and maybe not!).

Ford Cancels upgrade to Sync 3v2.2

I pulled the quote below off of the "FiestaST Forum. Does anyone know if it is true?? @fordIVT how about a comment??? See what is happening with Ford staying silent on this issue! "We are all MUSHROOMS!!!"

I just got off the phone with a Ford rep. He told me that they won't be releasing the 2.0 update for 2016 models because of some sofware/hardware incompatibility.
So now I'm stuck with the 1.0. I just bought my car and was told by two different dealerships that I would be able to run Android auto.
Again, I'm in Mexico I don't know if this applies in the US or Canada.

I don't have any info to add, but if it is indeed canceled I won't be even a tiny bit surprised.

I'm on my 3rd Escape lease (2010, 2013, now 2016) so I obviously like the vehicle (and my wife drive's a 2014 Focus), but Ford's track record for keeping promises on updates/etc is pretty abysmal. That is one of the reasons why I did not hesitate, for even a moment, to install the leaked update.
