Looks like Ford announced CarPlay and android Auto coming to Sync 3

Fords with Sync 3 are getting Android Auto and CarPlay

Owners of Ford vehicles with Sync 3 will soon be able to enjoy Android Auto or Apple's Car Play in their cars. The automaker announced that its connected car system will start playing nicer with your mobile-platform of choice.

The first Sync 3 powered vehicles to receive Android Auto and Apple's Car Play with be 2017 Fords starting with the Escape. Owners of 2016 Fords with the QNX-based system "will have an opportunity to upgrade later in the year," according to the car maker.

I decided to just go for it and install the update to v2.2. Used the link posted by Reno55. Worked great! Followed the instructions exactly, and it installed in roughly 30 minutes with no problems. I don't have anything Apple so I didn't bother with the hardware upgrade. Loaded up Android Auto afterwards and it seemed to be working fine. Looking forward to playing with it more!

Yes. The voice changed (lol)... not sure if it is better or worse overall. xD
They added some better traffic info to the Nav.
Could be coincidence, but my bluetooth connection seems more stable (not that it was bad before, but it seems better).

I am probably missing some things, but it is definitely more than just an AA/CP update. I am actually not using AA. I liked some parts of it, but there are some parts that I really just prefer from the Ford system. Now... that will probably change over time since AA will get updates and my Ford Sync3 system will likely not.

DonP I upgraded my 16 to the new version and have only had one time it crashed. After sitting for a few mins it was fine.. The usb hub is not necessary for AA.. just for CarPlay.. My friend did his Mustang and he did not swap the hub and his Android works just fine. I find its a tad bit slower on boot up but other than that its fine.

Assuming that I have Sync 3 to read my texts, show my radio station (always Sirius) and all the associated controls for it, and have Waze commands read to me, what benefit would there be for having Android Auto?? Can't figure this out, but I must be missing something.

Thanks.

It might not make any difference to you. In my case, it means that Google maps and directions are displayed on the panel, OK Google works much better than the built in system for voice commands, and it displays my next appointment from my calendar on screen so I can just touch it to load my destination. In Southern California, I find Google maps to be essential. The rerouting around traffic and traffic updates are extremely fast. I haven't compared with using Waze for directions; I typically have Waze on my phone's screen for the alerts, and it reads them out along with the other directions from maps.

I don't always plug in to AA, but it's probably 90% of the time.

I was successful in activating Apple Carplay in my 2016 SE and connect my iPhone 7+ by installing a new USB module and the Sync 3 version 2.2 files, which I found online. Easy install, works perfectly!
Where did you find the USB? What's the specific name? And what site did you download hack from? Have been considering trying it but haven't looked a ton into it but you made it seem so easy!

Thanks!

As near as I can tell the Ford IVTeam has abandoned this site or at least this question. I will continue to follow to confirm. What bothers me so much about this whole issue is not the fact that Ford has repeatedly missed promised dates but the fact that they have been totally silent on the issue. On one had I can understand if the "lawyers" are directing them not to respond but On the other, I can totally accept an explaination something Like "due to programming changes from the phone and device manufacturers we have encountered unforseen problems in making AA/CP as stable as we would like. Therefore, we are delaying the roll out".

Mind you, this does not make much sense with the owners reporting successful installation of "bootleg" versions but at least it provides us with something more than silence.

How is the 'bootleg' version working for you now that you have had it for awhile? Debating if I'm going to wait until my warranty expires or not before I try to install it
I installed it on 12/19/2016 and have had zero problems. I'm very happy with CarPlay.

I am ready to upgrade. It seems a little crazy to me to that you have to keep the vehicle running but still. Can you just drive while it is updating or do you have to be still?

Anyone done this while driving?

#162 ·
Yes. It's fine to do while driving.

No 2016 update yet - 1 year in ...

For anyone interested in the latest non-update from Ford, here's a chat transcript from today. Unreal. We bought our 2016 Escape after checking and rechecking with both corporate customer service and our dealer that this update would happen last summer! LOL the rep ended the chat with, "Do you need more time?"

XXXX:
I purchased an Escape in April 2016 and was told there would be an Apple Carplay update last summer ... but I have still not received information on it - how do I access it?
XXXX:
I will be glad to look into this for you!
XXXX:
Apple CarPlay will be available on 2016 SYNC 3-equipped vehicles, at a later date. An exact date has not been released as of yet, we cannot speculate on a timeframe at this point. We have not been provided further information.
XXXX:
is there an explanation as to why the yearlong delay?
XXXX:
or any compensation to customers?
XXXX:
No, Ford has not provided further information outside of the information provided above as of yet, unfortunately.
XXX:
ok but aren't you ford? I don't understand that part
XXX:
We have not been provided further information, we can only provide you with the information we have been told.
XXXX:
ok so I guess I am speaking to the wrong department - whom should I reach out to for the details?
Doyonne says:
There is no further details about the SYNC 3 update release date or any other department with further information unfortunately. However, you will need to periodically check the Owner.ford.com website for information about the update when it's released.
XXXX:
I understand you do not have the information but as a customer I certainly expect to be able to have this problem addressed by someone
XXXX:
As of now, Ford has not released any hardware or software for SYNC 3 installation. There is no further information that can be provided to you at this time.
XXXX:
ok so I would like to speak to a manager about this and have my case documented please
Doyonne says:
You have reached us through a virtual connection and will not be able to speak with someone directly, it would only be by email unless you would like to speak with by phone directly. If you would like to speak with someone over the phone directly, you will need to contact the In Vehicle Technology Department at 800-392-3673 prompts 1, 3, 1, 2 Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, Saturday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm Eastern Standard time.
XXXX:
an email or callback would be fine
XXXX:
To speak with someone directly, you will need to call the number above, or would you prefer a email?
XXXX:
will the email provide additional information on this issue ?
XXXX:
Unfortunately, it will not.

Data usage

The upgrade today went very well with any problems. Using Google maps is very cool when you don't know exactly where you are going. I have noticed a strange perk. The phone data does not need to be on to use the map. It needs to be on when inputting a destination and then can be turned off for the rest of the trip and the map is still functioning normal. Don't know why that is, but saves data use.

Found that it works fine with Android 5.0 and 6.01.

Known that when you enter a route in google maps, it downloads all the data for the route to the phone, allowing you to turn off cellular connection and just use the gps signal.
You do lose traffic updates when you do this though.

Anyone have Amazon Music crash on them consistently? When playing My Music then Purchased playlist, it seems to load the whole song, or time out trying. And if it does get to play the song, it crashes out and goes back to the home screen. Sometimes this results in Carplay having issues such as no other apps working or siri not working.

I've got a 2017 escape titanium version 2.0 of Sync 3.

I'm on 10.3 ios on my iphone 6 plus.

I tried to reset my phone to new. Master reset on Sync 3. Neither solves the issue.

I am unable to install the v2.2 update. I tried multiple USB flash drives (including a 32GB one, and tried both FAT32 and ExFAT) and can not get it to work. Each time I get an error saying: "Bad Installation File. One or more of the files being installed on your system did not install successfully". I am using the files directly from the Ford Owner site and have properly laid them out on the drive. The first few times I tried it appeared to be working and it even prompted me to remove the drive and that the installation would finish the next time the car was started. I restarted the car and it never installed and the "Bad Installation File" error would come up. Now it has apparently gotten worse as to where when I plug in the drive I get the error immediately and I don't even get to the next step. I did read that I was apparently supposed to leave the drive in when prompted to remove because there is a second part to the install; then remove it after the second removal message. Is that true? Nowhere was that even noted on the Ford Owner site... that would've been very helpful!!! I feel like it probably would have worked had I of known to leave it in when prompted the first time.

Does anyone know I way I can reset my Sync module so that I can try again? I've tried pulling the fuse to the Sync module, a soft reset (POWER + SEEK RIGHT), and a master reset and nothing will get to to even the point I was at before. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would try a smaller usb drive.. I used a 4gb fat usb drive and it ran fine.. the system may have an issue with the 32gb size.. hope that helps

I've been taking a pass on Android Auto in all cases except when I really want Google maps rather than Ford's nav system because there's too many limitations:
  • AA still requires you to plug cable into USB so you can't just connect wirelessly. Big fail there in today's tech.
  • If you want to use your steering wheel audio controls your music choices are basically Play Music and... Play Music. That's if you want to switch radio stations from apps like Tunein Radio or similar apps using your steering wheel audio controls rather than having to touch your screen while driving. All you're gonna get is volume up and down. Sync 3 allows you to full steering wheel button control over Sirius, AM/FM, and your phone's music library and allows voice commands for all 3 on top of that. Android Auto pales in comparison.

#180 ·
It does work fairly well with Pandora. You can't "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" songs, but you can skip with the steering wheel buttons and change stations with voice commands.

Lack of control of Sirius and am/fm does stink though. And it looks like Google isn't exactly making android auto improvements their top priority right now.

If you're unzipping it on a Mac, it's unzipping wrong. There should be 2 files and a folder you're adding to your flash drive. I don't have the old Mac extractions I tried, but it looks like all the Windows unzip did was put all those .gz files into a SyncMyRide folder.

There is a command line command you can run to extract it right, but I don't know it. $ unzip I think but not sure.

I managed to get the update to run, but it still shows me on 1.0. Now when I try to update thinking it didn't go through I get a bad files error despite them being the same. Same even if I redownload everything and start from scratch. Ugh.

#182 ·
interconnect,

Have you tried the bootleg version to see if that will run. I did the upgrade last week with it and I used a 4gb flash and it worked flawlessly. It has two stages to the install. Since your system is not working at this time, you may have nothing to lose.

#184 ·
I'm getting the "Bad Installation File. One or more of the files being installed on your system did not install successfully." I contacted Ford and their tech guys are supposed to call me back in the next couple of days to see how to fix it. I'll share when I hear back from them. Hopefully today.

I used the files that I got it to start the update from before and multiple fresh downloads of them. Gave up and decided I'm just going to wait to hear from them.

I did enable auto update in Sync in case it'll download a copy and fix itself. *fingers crossed* Otherwise, I hope their tech guys can just write some script that I can run to restore it to 1.0 and start over or something.

This thread is about Android Auto and CarPlay for the 2016 Sync 3 systems. There are other threads on the official update to Sync 3 v2.2. Please move the discussion to the appropriate thread. I noticed that there has been duplicate posts posted in the two threads.
