Can anyone help me solve a mystery? I'm trying to figure out what the very small plastic panel is on the front passenger side just below the headlight and above the foglight. If I remove it, there's a circular metal opening that looks like it has threads in it that leads to some metal part in the engine. Does anyone know what this is for? I can't find it anywhere in the owner's manual.

That's where you can screw in the optional recovery tow eye. It's basically a large bolt with a loop at the end that can be used as a tow point to pull your vehicle.

It's Ford part no.6M2Z-17A954-A and costs a little over $30 from the Ford accessories website: Recovery Hook | The Official Site for Ford Custom Accessories

If you drive in inclement weather often and feel you may have a need for an occasional tow (snow bank, ditch, etc.) then you may want to pick one up.

I just bought a Ford Escape 2014 SE - that has the slot for the recovery hook. I saw in other places that it came with the Escape - but I just read on here that it is an optional purchase....So, it's optional?

So - from my interpretation - If you are being pulled out by somebody other than a tow truck driver, you will need to buy one, correct?
