Hello Everyone,

Just joined the forum, glad to be able to access all of the information available and appreciate everyone's willingness to educate one another!

I am posting from PA. Recent FE owner:

2013 Ford Escape SEL, 1.6 Ecoboost 4WD. Currently at 27,XXX miles.

I have searched other threads but none quite pinpoints my question (If there is one someone could direct me to, much appreciated).

Questions/Comment:

I am not hearing the turbo "kick in" or as others have noted with the 1.6 "suck air." I seem to hear all engine (which I would expect to hear some with it being a 1.6), but not hearing any turbo/noticing any increase in power other than when there is a change in gear (downshit). Not expecting this to be some high performace machine, but I want to understand whether this is common or possible how to troubleshoot/tell if the turbo is functioning as intended.

As far as the car itself: Beautiful... This is my wife and I's first Ford, and very impressed with the design and features.

Thanks all for any input!

Other than fuel mileage going in the dumper over 3500 rpm, I couldn't tell that mine has a turbo, there is no real lag just a little less power down low. Not saying it is low on power (it isn't, relative to the setup of the 1.5l), just no point that it goes from dog to super star.

I still haven't setup a gauge for it in Torque on my cell phone to see when it really is in boost or not, I meant to do that this weekend but had to get my older car ready for my daughter to drive for awhile this summer.

Your car is working just fine. These engines drive more like larger N/A engines than your typical turbocharged applications. My 2.0L has almost no perceptible lag or turbo noise, less of each than the 3.5L EB engines I had in my two previous F150s. I've never driven a 1.6L Escape, but I wouldn't expect any different.

If the turbo isn't producing the expected boost, you would see a check engine light with an underboost code. Without such a fault showing, the engine is likely running as designed.

Check your AFR when you get Torque setup. I was surprised that mine stays above 14.5:1 until I hit 3,500 RPMs, at which point it drops rapidly. That, at least in the 2.0L engine, is the point where it runs extremely rich to lower EGTs to protect things. Impressive how it maintains a typical stoich ratio under full boost under 3,500 RPMs though...I'd be interested to see if the 1.5/1.6 is similar.

Thanks all for the input.

Glad to know all is status quo.

I was a bit more attentive today and think I did hear it some. Either way, with your input, not too concerned. Drives great and no error codes!

Bangster, what is Torque setup? I am assuming this is accompanied by a monitor that can be read via phone app?

Torque is an app (there are others, for more specific purposes) on a cell phone, that in conjunction with a pretty cheap Bluetooth OBDII/CAN adapter can show gauges of many parameters, data log, clear CEL, read CEL, etc.

It was nice to use Torque on my older cars, but it shows so much more with the 2017 FE, I have 4 or 5 pages of gauges for my older cars, I can't imagine what I will end up with for the FE.

Have the same with FWD. You should not hear any unique sounds. The only thing that I have noticed on an occasion is a slight turbo lag on some accelerations. Not at all bad though but then I do not press the vehicle much.
