Adding Back up camera to an upgraded SYNC3 on a 2013FE

Hi, I’m in the process of upgrading my 2013 FE SEL, (with Sony) from SYNC2/MFT to SYNC3 and I would also like to add a back up camera. I just ordered the SYNC3 components, so I figured it might make sense to add a back up camera as well. I’ve tried to search for answers in previous posts, but most postings for adding BUC are old (2013-15) so couldn’t find anything relevant for my situation of upgraded SYNC3.

I’ve found this OEM camera on ebay Any idea if this all the components I’d need? Or would I need to get anything else for a seamless instal?

You've got to add logic and wiring for this to work, it's not just a simple plugin.
The add in is the same for the hardware on MFT & Sync3, the 2013MY did not come with a camera as standard and it was an early add on the 2014MY.
Either way, do a bit of research on the logic portion for Sync3 to work in your vehicle, it has to have custom programming (can't just drop a unit in from say a 2016MY Escape). You will have a few issues like park assist not working correctly (no fix for this one) and your AC on/off toggle in the climate screen being reversed of actual status (have to jail break it to fix this one).

I installed a backup camera on my 2013 SEL last year and can tell you a few things.

As far as mounting the camera is concerned, OEM camera hardware will only “drop in” if you have a lift gate trim piece that is camera compatible (has the cutout for the camera mounting plate and the threaded screw hole for holding the camera in place). 2013 FE’s without the camera don’t have the cutout. You can probably find used camera compatible trim (chrome or paint matched) from a 2014-2016 FE that’s in a scrap yard, eBay, etc.

Your FE likely won’t have the full wiring set up required for an OEM camera (because it didn’t need to be there). Mine doesn’t. It may also be missing the camera module.

Personally, I installed an aftermarket camera but because I wanted the most OEM looking thing possible, I purchased one that allowed me to drill a hole in my existing lift gate trim and flush mount. It was way cheaper and easier than it would have been for me to try rigging up an OEM camera and I’m overall quite pleased with the results. I tapped the reverse light for power, routed the video wire all the way behind the screen, then tapped the appropriate APIM wires (mine had the pins filled, some may not).

I have Sync2 and just had to reprogram via FORScan to get the camera feed enabled on the display. From what jpohlman has said, it might be more involved to get your Sync3 working.

The Sync3 upgrade is really straight forward, you need custom programming for the APIM since you're dropping it into a car it was never meant for.
Total time to put it in, about 30-45 minutes.
The things to remember: 1) if you have park assist you'll lose it; 2) your parking/backup sensors will still beep but you won't see it displayed on the screen like a 2016MY+ will; 3) the AC status button display (on/off) will be the reverse of what the physical controls show. (this can be fixed with a jailbreak from FMods).

Really? They're two major features to lose. 😕

I hadn't noticed the lose of them mentioned in the past.

Its only in the 2013-2015, 2016MY on came with Sync3 and everything works (granted they removed climate after 2016 from the screen).
Park assist on the 2013-2015 is only parallel parking, and MFT never had the individual sensor display on the screen (backup camera still works normally) it was just warning tones.

Oh okay. My Kuga must be different? It's got Sync 2 (MFT) with the parallel parking function, and shows the individual parking sensors in the reversing camera picture. The individual sensors change colour to indicate which sensor/s are detecting the objects (along with the tone changing.) I was aware of the issue with the reversed climate controls. Sync 3 was introduced in the Valencia produced Kuga/ Escape with the external facelift/ twin scroll engine update- it was MY2017 here. I think mine was classed as either a 2016.25 or 2016.5 build?

You still get the back up lines and color bars/tones with MFT or Sync3 when you have/drop it in a 2013-2015.
Park assist with MFT is the 12 sensor system, you pull next to a parking spot, hit the parking button, instructions come up on the screen and flip on your turn signal, the car takes it from there. This is what you lose.

The warning tones when you get close to something like say a parking garage wall still work, with MFT you didn't have the overhead outline of the car on the screen with the color bars showing how close say the nose is to the wall, just more intense beeping. With Sync3 native cars with 10-12 sensors you get the overhead outline and color bars and warning tones.

In the US with the 2016MY the Escape got Sync3 as well as the new twin scroll 2.0L EB, 2017MY brought the body redesign along with the 1.5L L4 EB replacing the 1.6L L4 EB.

Yep..isn't it strange how the Escapes differ for different countries.

The 2017 models (2017MY) in Australia introduced the twin scroll turbo and sync3 and the different body design to the earlier 2016 models.

Escape, Fusions, Edge, F150, its all of them and its just not the model name re-badging.
Regional differences like LH vs RH drive, DAB ACM vs HD Radio/Sat ACM, lighting changes all make sense as they're being sold in different countries/continents.
But logic? The best 2 examples I can think of there is disabling the global open/close on most US and not enabling the IPC frost warning. You really have to wonder how many hours were spent on making that choice.
The 2013 Fusion was a completely one off year and back when you could look at a car's build using ETIS there was actually a note "all built after x date built as Mondeo", it really makes you wonder when the last time a review of process was done.

My Sync 2 does that - it has the overhead car outline with the coloured bars showing which sensor is being activated. It sounds like there are some programming differences between the Valencia and North American built models for MFT/ Sync 2?

I'll have to have a look on the UK Kuga forums as some guys on there had done the Sync 3 upgrade. All I recall them having problems with was the reversed climate controls on the screen. I don't know if those people had the automated parking though?

I've noticed over the years the North American market seems to get every new feature/ upgrade 12mths or more sooner than Europe. And then it used to slowly trickle down to Australia!

Part of the differences that have to be reconciled when you do a custom AsBuilt for a MFT/Sync3 upgrade is that part of the settings are regional, EU vs NA, LHD vs RHD.
The flipped climate controls typically happen more often when someone does Sync1 4" to a Sync 3 8" upgrade, there are a few wires on the FCIM connector that typically need to be moved.

@zaparkin - I finally got around to install the backup camera this weekend. There was an issue with the trim seller, and I never got it delivered. I ended up getting an after market camera , and a 54pin connector (It fits both SYNC3 and MFT). I tapped to the reverse light for power - I did need to bring out my inner MacGyver to overcome some install issues, and it works just fine, though I seem to have lost my backup chimes, but probably need to play with Forscan a bit to figure it out.
