DIY Battery Monitor System Reset

Apology in advance if this has been addressed before, but I'd not noticed any posts telling us how we could reset the Battery Monitor System when we do a DIY battery replacement (lacking a dealer diagnostics tool).

Playing with my old rev 2.1.21 beta version of FORScan this morning I tripped on the "settings" tab only to find an option to reset the Battery Monitor System (!) You've got to be connected to your FE to see this.

Nowhere near needing a battery replacement I didn't 'run' the option, but everything else I've used FORScan for works fine so no reason to doubt this feature and I was glad to find it.

Get FORScan for windows to run on your laptop here (free) Download FORScan

You'll of course need an OBDII > USB interface cable (might also work with a Bluetooth interface, I've not tried that). Search ELM 327 USB for plenty of cheap sources for the interface (NOTE - ignore/don't use the included and totally unnecessary 'driver' mini disk that ships with the ELM .... most all versions I've read about, including the one that came with mine, have a malware / virus on the disk. No driver is needed for the interface to work with Windows, at least Windows 7, it's a standard USB device with built-in firmware support).

Anyway, just FYI for those that would like to DIY replace the battery and skip the dealer completely.

If anyone has another inexpensive tool that offers reset of the BMS, please share. Not being a "DTC" per-se, my 'generic' OBDII scan / DTC reset tool doesn't provide that functionality.

Wow! It has been so long since I've been here but checked Duck-Duck for a battery reset procedure, hoping that someone had finally found something. I used to be able to wash the car and listen to the stereo but now, battery saver in just a few minutes. Battery is a year old. The flash 5 times and brake 3 worked! Originally, I used 7 flashes and no soap. I'm post car wash but will test this.... Thanks!!!!

There's definitely something wrong with the BMS side of things to get the above data from ForScan. I assume your engine was running?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the BMS sensor on the negative terminal is simply a very low resistance high power shunt resistor, the two wires are connected to either end of the resistor and measure the voltage drop across it. More current flow = a higher voltage. The BMS then does a simple calculation from the known value of the resistor and the measured voltage to work out the current. It's a common way to measure current flow.

I've had ForScan running in the past with the ING "on" /engine off and got a negative current reading - something like 13 Amps. Your "Days in Service" figure is also strange unless you had just reset it?

I had my battery replaced about 3 weeks ago on my 2017 2.0L and wondered if QuickLane reset the BMS. My Auto Stop/Start still wasn't working (many would say that's a good thing). I tried the headlight flash/break pedal procedure but never got the battery light flashing result so I never knew if it worked. I decided to order an adaptor and check with ForScan. Just last night the Auto Stop/Start started working. The adaptor arrived today and sure enough the days in service shows '4'.

Should have just replaced the battery myself.

Even though the BMS was reset sometimes the car needs to sit overnight or 8 hours for the new battery to 'relearn' the technology and that is possibly why your stop/start feature did not work initially.
