Marbles in the motor?

My 2020 Titanium Hybrid sounds like this, and Service says that after checking with "the hotline" (w/e that means) that this is considered "normal operation". I disagree. Anyone else have this model and trim, and have this same sound?

Marbles?

To add some more info:
-it has been making the rattling noise regardless of ambient temperature, whether the a/c is on or not, or whether the engine is warmed up or not -- if the motor is running, the knocking is there
-I picked the vehicle up from the dealer last night. Spoke with service mgr for a while, he said he did not work on the vehicle but would come outside as i started it, and sure enough he immediately said "ok yeah that does not sound normal-it sounds like something is loose", so at least now someone agrees with me and maybe they'll figure it out
-I also complained about my fordpass constantly throwing 'Vehicle is in Deep Sleep Mode' errors. They found a tsb to reflash the communication module. So far it has not given me the error again, but it's only been 12 hours...

Just to tie up any loose ends on my long post #87 I have had the car back for a month and I have not experienced the noise. It appears to be fixed. I am attaching the Service Paper work if you are so inclined to read it.

@GHinWI Yes it maybe nothing, but it surely is not normal. The 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid I had never made this noise in the 7 years I had it. Don't know if it had the same transmission but it did have the same engine. Nobody it telling you to do anything about it, that is your decision. I only provided my experience in case it might help someone else in the future.

Not trying to be a downer, but I would've probably just accepted the noise over allowing the local mechanics to tinker with your car, it is unlikely that they could do the job as well as the factory. I bet the noise comes back come winter time also.

It's been a while, but finally bit the bullet and took my 2020 Hybrid with 25,000 miles in for the trans rattle on cold starts. The software update did help and almost eliminated the noise, but if I shifted into Neutral when cold it still rattled away. The update did not correct that issue. Noise never got any worse during the mileage I had it, just was annoying on cold days. I made a comment to the dealer about what a pain it must be to have to pull the engine/trans out of these vehicles. He said it's not all that bad and they've done more that their fair share, so they're pretty good at it. Thought that was interesting. He also mentioned they're seeing some new Maverick Hybrids with the same issue. It's a shame Ford still hasn't remedied the issue after all this time. Supposedly there is not an updated flywheel damper, still replacing with the same original spec. I'm extremely happy the dealer gave me an Edge loaner that was brand new, although the mpg sure is a lot less! I'm sure the car will be fixed properly, just disappointed in Ford who is apparently willing to make all these repairs rather than correct the source of the problem. Also getting the Deep Sleep mode fixed after two years. Battery always checked out fine, but they have enough history with this issue now that they're just going to replace the battery under warranty. I was told don't expect more than 24 months out of the replacement.

Been a while since my last post as well, but I took My 2020 Titanium Hybrid in about two weeks ago, and they are currently replacing the transmission. It is expected to be ready tomorrow! yay! This is the second time I've had to take it in; last time, they spent a bunch of time doing software updates and replaced the flywheel, which seemed to fix the issue for a few days. The dealer said they had seen quite a few hybrids with this issue (which is probably why they decided to swap out the entire thing instead of doing software updates for days like the last visit. Hopefully, this is the end of this issue; fingers crossed.

Just wanted to provide an update on my flywheel damper replacement. After being at the dealer for 5 weeks (short on technicians and backlog of trans work) I've had my vehicle back for a few days and all appears well. Fortunately (or unfortunately) we've had colder than normal temps in the south so I've been able to start the vehicle with temperatures in the 30's and rattle noise is gone. Hopefully it'll stay that way. Unfortunately the engine surge when shifted into N when cold is still there, even after re-programming everything. It was completely by accident that I discovered that problem, dealer did replicate and I've read of others that have it, but there doesn't seem to be a fix. I'm just not going to shift into N, doesn't affect performance whatsoever. Vehicle drives like new, actually better than new since the rattle was there when I bought it, temps just didn't stay cold long enough in February for the dealer to replicate it ... plus there really wasn't any sort of fix back in 2021 either. Tech did a great job, one would never know the vehicle had such major work done to it. Also got the 12V battery replaced due to Deep Sleep issue. That's a story for another forum. Will update if anything changes in the future.

Per my work order, it states "replaced flywheel damper assembly", TSB 22-2061 calls it a flywheel damper assembly, part is listed as Disc Asy - Clutch, I believe we all know the part we're talking about regardless of what it's called. To my knowledge still no updated part planned, Replaced with NZ6Z-7550-A

Sent my service advisor a screen shot of the Deep Sleep issue and he said to bring it right back. The car hadn't warmed up enough for the damper noise to completely go away, so the shop foreman came out, heard it, said leave the car and the next thing I know they're providing me with a new Edge as a rental. Blew my mind. They felt bad I had left the car there for a week and then when I picked it up it had the exact same issues. That may have worked in my favor, either way these guys won me over for any future vehicle business. I know loaners are next to impossible to get, Good luck
That's the way it is supposed to work.

If being a dealer and you are uncaring or incompetent, you need to close the doors. HOW FORD CORPORATE lets dealers get away with his is incomprehensible, especially with the quality of product now.

Can anyone tell if if this marbles in the motor noise issue due to the flywheel/damper is still an issue on MY22 and MY23 Escapes or do the newer models have the new part that supposedly fixes the problem? My wife is going to be buying a 23 Escape Hybrid here in a few weeks and this issue has me a little concerned. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

After I go my Kuga/Escape phev 2021 clutch assembly changed because of rattle the car has developed a new sound in low speed low rev when combustion engine is on.

The facts about sound:
  • it seems to be more loud after braking first
  • it seems to be more loud when going uphill
  • it happens in low speed 0-10 mph
  • it comes nearby the drive motor 2 or driver side driveshaft or motor generator1
  • it is amplified when combustion engine is running:
If I drive the car in ev only mode at slow speed and then force combustion engine to turn on the sound gets way louder (before that in ev only mode I can hear the electric engine 2 running a bit unevenly with my mic setup. When ice is on the dragging sound starts)

How to replicate the sound:
Make sure the combustion engine is on
Drive slowly and brake to 0-3 mph speed
Accelerate gently to 9 mph speed
-> a rotational whining/dragging sound happens

The sound is in this video from 20 s onwards:

If someone had any idea why this happens I would highly appreciate it :) Could it be the drivers side driveshaft seal or maybe startergenerator or motor2 running unevenly?

It's kind of weird. It started after they changed the damper between ICE and gearbox. Sound can be heard in sport mode or when setting "charge battery" mode in normal drive mode. It requires the ice to be running.

I think the intervals in the sound happen because of the new damper (different spring characteristics) but the whining happens because of unknown reason.
