2018 FE, 1.5l SE 4WD bought used 2 months ago...

Just completed a trip...1850 miles...750 miles into it, engine light came on, middle of Missouri...found dealer...code was P0301...cylinder misfire...in checking, they swapped coils from #1 to #2 ....fault still with #1 , so they changed the spark plug...re-tested, then reset code. Sent us on our way. Less than 200 miles later, light came on again. It's Saturday night...checked at an Autozone store...same code P0301....spent the night...went to another dealer Monday AM...they ended up changing the coil on #1 . Re-tested...all ok. Drove 850 miles home without any problems.

Questions....Should coils last longer? Why did changing plug work for a short time? Anyone else had issues with coils?
Thanks for any responses...

Yes, coil packs typically last much longer than 25k miles.

But part defects happen, that's what warranties are for.

Coil pack failure symptoms can often manifest irregularly, especially at first, and may relate to 'heat soak' .... likely the plug change had no real bearing on cause of your issue at all (other than the plug may have been fouled as a symptom of the coil mis-firing; IMO that dealer replacing only the plug did you no favors in spite of the 'swap' diagnostic result, especially considering you were in the middle of a long road-trip away from home).

This isn't a commonly reported problem here (at that mileage), I'd not worry about it, IMO you likely just suffered a rare part defect.

UPDATE.....

So today the check engine light came on again....went to local Autozone to check code...its the same issue...code P0301...Misfire Cylinder #1 ....so new plug, new coil...same issue...
Will try my local Ford dealer....who happens to be 20 miles away.

Getting frustrated with this....

I have to agree with waverunner10. You have an issue other than just an ignition issue. It’s highly likely that you have coolant leaking into the cylinder. You should point this out to your local dealer. The 1.5 has been notorious for this and you need it remedied right away. This needs to be taken care of while under warranty.

Thanks for all the input....I copied and printed that TSB...thanks. Whats confusing is the miles/time between the misfire codes. 1st occurred at 27,909 miles...plug replaced....next occurred 2 days and 223 miles later....3rd occurred 5 days and 920 miles later.

Straight to dealership coolant can warp the head. Common fault on the 1.0 EcoBoost in the UK.
Referred to as the ecoboom engines over here.

RS even had it but that was due to having mustang gasket fitted by accident.

Delivered and returned my fair share in the 3 and a half years working for Ford.

Boy, this is making me feel real confidant about the Ford Escape 1.5l....Might be looking for a different vehicle after this next visit.

That would make it a one of a kind Ford Escape, since it is 4wd.
My 1st Escape, a 2016, was FWD with the 2.5, liked it, but wanted 4wd.

UPDATE: Well the tech discovered coolant in cyl #1 . They took off the head, inspected, and found cracks and scratches in the cylinder and found the top of the block to be out of spec and warped(their words). Yesterday I went in to see the car....Head was removed, engine was still in the bay....tech showed me the damage...piston also had a excessive amount of side to side play in it. Parts dept. informed them that the new long block had arrived. Because of other work load, it will be probably be late next week before we get our Escape back, but it will have a new engine... Will update this board with any other developments.
Thanks for everyone's input on this

As an aside...I'm wondering if the board monitors could somehow get a "Sticky" thread going for the number of posts here about engine replacements that continue to happen....

Shhhhh!!! They replaced the block of my engine 2.0T but I got rid of it before the end of the warranty...didn’t want to see what’s to come.
