Unfortunately, even if willing to buy the new parts and DIY, that won't 'clear' the national registry recall notice status - the dealer is required (at least in theory) to do the work again themselves before updating the recall registry status. Perhaps only an issue come resale time. Or perhaps you've got a dealer that'll play 'fast-and-loose' on that with you.

Mine is going in for the recall on Thursday. Yeah, no one will have the potential to fall out!

Here is the recall part number
CJ5Z-54264A26-A LATCH
this part number is all 4 door latches!
3 >4 hours dealer charged Ford $190.00
Yeah, that's the PN for a 'Dealer Recall Kit' that includes all the different latches for all Escape doors.

For the Escape replacement the dealer gets reimbursement for 2.9 labor hours (hourly labor rate is per Dealer>Ford agreement, varies by region, etc)

The recall was fixed by my ford service center. No adverse affects and no noticeable difference. I expect all ford service centers have replaced so many door latches that they can do it in their sleep.

Mine was done shortly before buying the car last month, and I can't detect any signs of an issue. No rattles, squeaks, or abnormal operation.

Mine got fixed as well when it went in for something else. I can't tell any difference in the way the doors open or close and nothing different in the road noise.

Thanks for the feedback. I was on the fence about whether to buy the kit and do it myself or take a chance and let dealer do it.
Just never feel comfortable letting others fix my stuff. I may let the dealer do this one.

I'm not worried about not being taken off the recall list. I generally keep my cars forever (15 plus yrs) and typically sell to a friend. Anyone buying my car would be shown receipt for buying the kit and old parts removed. The kit to service all 4 latches is listed by several dealers on ebay for roughly 100 bucks. Even at that, no fun to spend all day playing with door panels. For those interested, there is a youtube video showing how to service door panels with minimal damage to trim pieces.

I'm with you on that, and though I don't sell to friends the 'formal' recall work/list deletion must be done by the dealer even years from now if that's an issue when I finally do sell.

I'm also loath to let the dealer mess with my car, but have no problem accessing the door interior (BTDT several times with no damage for speaker upgrades and sound deadening work). I knew the individual latches were available but the cost is on the order of ~$350 for all four going that route.

With your mention (and now my confirmation) that the 'recall kit' of latches is available at the very reasonable price of ~$100 delivered from folks like TascaParts, I'm very inclined to eat the cost and DIY this when I'm back in the doors to install an MLV+CCF sound deadener layer.

Thanks @oldschool for that 'lead' on the parts kit!

It seems as if all of the repairs have been done as a result of proactive contact by owners. Since the original letter was sent out last Fall, has anyone actually been contacted by Ford yet to make an appointment for the repair?

Yes - per post 42 above I got my 'make an appointment' letter on Feb 6, 2017.

Great thread, thanks.

I bought my prego daughter a 2015 SE 1.6L with 20,000 miles about 6 weeks ago.
We thought it would be a perfect baby car.

I checked today at the local dealer regarding the latch recall.
It has not been done and needs it.

Daughter will schedule soon as she gets her work schedule and it's get done.
Very useful thread for us.
Maybe even a life saver.

I'm coming up on 42K miles, so it may be time to call the dealer and schedule this if they have the parts. While I'm there, I'll need to ask about my wife's Airbags for her Milan.

My daughter's 2014 has two recalls pending - door latches and coolant temp sensor. She lives In ATL and I've been asking her to get it done but in true millennial fashion she's been putting it off. Our local Ford dealer isn't open on Saturdays and never has any Escape parts in stock. I took her car to Lugoff Ford today and they did both recalls in about 5 hrs and gave me a 2017 loaner. Shoutout to Lugoff Ford in Lugoff SC. They were very professional - showed me the parts replaced and did the job well. My car was also clean when I got it back. I had similar experience there with my former Mustang. Thanks for a job well done!

Door Latch Recall

I had asked my dealership several months ago about doing the factory recall on the door latch issue, after I had finally received the official letter from Ford about it. The dealer's service writer basically blew it off, told me it was no big deal, and not to worry about it. They'd "be in touch when there was something to talk about." I found it a bit off-putting, since it seemed they didn't care all that much about things. Since I don't usually have passengers in the back seats, I decided to let the matter go.

More than three months later, they called me yesterday to let me know they have my parts in stock, and need to get my car in "as soon as possible" to get this "important safety repair completed right away!"

Seriously? Seems like quite a change in their tune. I wish they were as interested in solving the warranty issues I've complained about.

At any rate, I've scheduled the repair for this coming week. They're quoting an hour per door. We'll see if they do a good job.

Dave
