Checking a 2017 2.0 AC compressor clutch

Can a tech savvy person tell me if it is possible to check a compressor clutch with a hot wire on this 2017 Titanium 2.0. I tried on mine by connecting a hot (12v) wire to a pigtail I have that fits the compressor at the electrical connections next to the pulley. (It also has 2 electrical terminals at the opposite end.) It was first connected to where the green wire from the car had been connected. When I touched the second wire (2 wire connection) from the other compressor terminal to a ground I get a direct short, so I was only scratchig the wire against a ground cable so as to prevent melting the wire. The clutch did not activate. I tried the same procedure connecting the hot wire to the other compressor terminal and stilll no results. I have a second compressor with clutch for this car (was planning to swap the clutch out thinking it was the culprit) and get the same results. Nothing seems to activate either clutch. I also tried connecting the ground cable from the car to the body of the second compressor and connecting each of the two compressor wires (in turn) to the hot wire and still no clutch response. It appears to me there is something very different with the compressors that keeps them from being evaluated...perhaps something the wires on the other end control. Solutions anyone?

Jpohlman, are you saying then that there is no way to activate the clutch with it completely disconnected from the car? or that there is no way to check a clutch on a compressor that is not yet on a car, if I for instance was buying one that was removed from a wrecked vehicle?

You could cause serious damage by randomly connecting 12V to different wires.
