Grinding front passenger side when accelerating

I have a 2014 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0L Eco Boost with 150k miles. There is a grinding sound that it makes upon acceleration and at idle (after driving it around). Sound comes from the front passenger side.

The grinding noise starts small then gets louder as I accelerate (Sounds like I'm in a monster truck). Funny part about it is it only makes the noise while the gear is in drive. As soon as you put it into park or in reverse the noise completely stops.

What's worse is that the noise goes away after driving for 30 min+ so when I took it to the shop, there was no noise to complain about.

I changed the transmission fluid a year ago. Mechanic thinks wheel bearing, but the sound remains regardless of turning right or not.

If anyone know what this could be, please advise.

Noise is pretty bad. Don’t wait and have it checked and replace ASAP. Bad bearings usually don’t seize but it can happen.

Re reading your first post, you seem to imply that the noise is occurring even when you’re not moving? If so, it could be a transmission issue or a front right axle problem. I didn’t click until I heard the sound in your video.

I don’t know much about automatic transmissions but like standard transmissions, there is a part between the engine and the transmission. I think the correct name for an automatic transmission is transfer case.

So potential issues are wheel bearing, front axle and or transfer case. If problem is the front axle, the transmission would be leaking but to see that, you have to remove the bottom cover and visually inspect the bottom of the transmission to spot a leak.

Hope a wiz on this site will pick it up from there as I’m not a professional mechanic (I know theory but I have little practice).

Edit: add to the list pulley bearings.

Did you ever find out what the issue is? My 2013 Ford Escape Titanium (139K km, 87K miles) is doing the same thing. It makes a rumbling/rattling sound when I accelerate (idle is fine) and it doesn’t go away until I coast, brake, or stop at a red light. Ford dealer tech thought (just by listening to it) that it might be the tranny, which I had a shop rebuild in 2020 (rather than paying $6K for a new one).

2013 2 liter AWD 128,000 miles Slight Vibration
I recently replaced the upper transmission mount (located below the battery box) you must remove the battery and air cleaner box plumbing
It came out in 2 pieces. no more vibration
I bought the Anchor brand. they are all about engine and transmission mounts
I'm sure Anchor makes them for the Ford Motor company
