I FINALLY had the noise/clunk occur when driving with a service advisor and he acknowledged hearing it. He diagnosed the issue as the shocks and told me that there had been a lot of them in the past few weeks due to the cold weather. I was told that parts were on back order and they would fix the issue when parts are available.

Does anyone have some suggestions for some questions I can ask of the service advisor when the parts arrive. Should I request any specific parts - are there upgrades ? Has anyone actually had this fixed on a permanent basis?

Thanks for your help.

The odd thing since my last post - the noise would happen all the time when it rained and the roads were wet. We had a rainy day today so I stopped by the dealer without an appointment. Got a tech to ride along. We drove outside the shop and it made the thunking noise and a rubbing noise when I turned right. The tech said it was the shock, has a bad seal inside. Bad news is that they are on backorder for another month. They said it was OK to drive until then, more of an annoyance. He said they have had a number of them replaced. When it is replaced I will post again whether it's fixed.

Here's the results of my trip to the dealer this morning:

Hope this helps anyone with this issue and a "dealer doesn't know what to do" problem. I should know for sure about the fix the next time we have a steady rain in the area.

MY escape is 2016 SE with 14000 miles registered.
I heard noise from rear end when T. dropped to 35-40 in rainy days a month ago. A technician inspected and confirmed shock failure. He replaced both rear shocks and road test verified correction.

2017 Creaking Rear Suspension

My 2017 Escape SE FWD with 1000 miles is making the same creaking noises as described elsewhere in this forum. I got it on 21 June 17 (built 2/17). It doesn't make a difference if it is wet or dry. I first noticed it a couple weeks ago while driving over uneven road and over speed bumps, it was probably masked by the radio before that. I haven't taken it to the dealer yet as I have learned to investigate these kinds of issues with other owners first in an attempt to reduce dealer smoke being blown up my backside.

Is there a TSB out that specifically addresses this issue? Anybody had a successful cure?

Thanks in advance.

Our 2014 Ford Escape just started exhibiting the squeak behavior. It seems to be coming from the center or rear undercarriage, and only happens when it's over 75 degrees. I took it to a local service tech and he was unable to solve it, but he suggested taking it to Ford and having them check the sway bar. We brought it to the local Ford dealer and they were unable to duplicate the squeak as the temperature dropped the two days they had the car. They had replaced the rear hatchback pistons a few months ago and so yesterday they replaced all the clips in the panels from that repair...it made no difference. Hoping it stays hot so we can bring it back tomorrow and they can duplicate the squeaks, I think the fact that they have yet to hear them is hurting the diagnosis. I will post any updates as we work with them to solve.

Squeak solved

Three trips to the Ford dealer with no success, but my local service shop solved it. There were two issues. First, one of the shock absorbers had a slow drip and the fluid was causing a squeak. Second, the left rear lower control arm was rubbing metal to metal and had a spring piece that was also rubbing against metal. THe tech replaced that control arm, and on the right side he ground it down a bit to stop the rubbing. No squeaks so far, hit lots of speed bumps and potholes and made lots of turns.

So, check rear lower control arms and rear shocks if you are trying to solve a squeak issue.

Dropped my Escape off at the dealership this past Saturday, reporting a creaking/rubbing/fluttery kind of sound from the rear during acceleration/bumpy roads ONLY when it is raining or has recently rained.

Picked it up this past Tuesday, dealership reporting that they replaced both rear shocks.

Rained last night, no sound this morning... so it seems to be fixed, but I will wait for one more heavy rain day before I fully accept it. :) It also feels like it might be riding a little bit more smoothly (not that I noticed a problem before) but I might just be comparing it to the Nissan Rogue they gave me to drive while they had my Escape.

I have the same problem. Mine is a 2015 Escape SE 4WD. Noticed the noise starting end ofsummer.

I hear the noise mostly on speed bumps and when I leave my garage or gas station.

I took out the spare tire kit and all the stuff in my trunk and the creaking sound is still there.

Here?s the link to the creaking sound I recorded - https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5t_Jf1wkZYiLUZ6RFVsWTdWR0E

Anyone knows the cost of repairing the shocks? My warranty is up. Just want to check the price compared to third party.

Message me if you don?t feel like posting the cost.

Noise in rear suspension- '13 to '17 Escape

The most common issue are the rear shocks. With higher mileage, look at the Lower, short "wishbone" front arm. There are new improved ones with solid bushings from Ford. The outer bushing tends to delaminate. I have also seen two , where the bushing and metal sleeve came loose in the hole that it is pressed into. Last resort are the rear swaybar end bushings. To diag, just disconnect them and drive around.

Note: The shocks make all kinds of noises, creaks and rolling, rotational sounds......

I hope this helps everyone in Escape Land!

I hope shocks are the fix. My 16 SE only has 18k miles on it but if you drive in the wet/cold it makes the creaky annoying noise too. Even when its dry if I sit in the backseat and someone else drives slowly I can listen and hear the creak although its not as loud as it is when its wet out. I have tried to lubricate a few bushings so far back there but none look worn or out of place/squished out of their normal position. I don't mind spending a few dollars on new shocks and I can easily do that myself if it fixes it.

I have discovered that the noise is from the rear bumper cover rubbing against the bumper impact absorbers/pylons. I will post a picture later.

I believe I saw that post of yours back in one of the posts I was reading. I did see a pic. I might give the lubrication on those a try!

It’s tough to get up in there without removing the cover. I used shims to spread the two surfaces and tried to spray lube up in there. Worked for awhile.

Squeaking Rear Suspension

When the outside temperatures drop to around minus 20 C and lower, a squeaky noise occurs in the rear suspension when travelling over bumps and dips on the paved roads. The squeaking is quite irritating in the cabin, especially on a new car purchased the fall of 2012. Anyone else had this experience and was the dealer able to fix this?
I had a VERY similar problem and solved it by simply putting grease on my lift gate(hatch) latches[main latch and window latch] on my 2009 Ford Escape. I used White lithium grease, but really any grease would probably do the trick or at least be able to determine if that’s the issue. I sincerely hope anyone with this issue will try it before spending tons of money on a mechanic blindly replacing parts.
